Indonesia Battles Nationwide Wildfires as El Niño Deepens 2026 Dry Season

Close to 50,000 firefighters and disaster personnel, backed by dozens of helicopters, are battling wildfires across Indonesia as an unusually intense dry season grips the archipelago. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) confirmed that regional authorities deployed over 48,000 personnel in response to the spreading emergency, which has scorched tens of thousands of hectares of land and peatland. Indonesia's meteorological agency, BMKG, attributes the ferocity of the 2026 dry season to El Niño conditions, which typically cause drier weather across Southeast Asia and are expected to persist through early 2027 Reuters.
The scale of the disaster is substantial. Approximately 48,890 hectares of peatland are ablaze across five provinces: Riau, Jambi, and South Sumatra on Sumatra island, and Central and South Kalimantan on Borneo. Indonesia's forestry ministry reported that more than 107,000 hectares of land caught fire nationwide between January and June 2026, double the total area burned in all of 2023. Indonesian officials are pointing squarely at El Niño as the primary driver. BNPB had previously warned in July that El Niño and the 2026 dry season were forecast to increase the risk of drought, forest and land fires, and a clean water crisis. The agency predicted that the El Niño phenomenon affecting forest and land fires would peak between August and September 2026.
The largest single blaze in August 2026 is burning through Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java, where approximately 743 hectares (1,836 acres) have been scorched. The fire has consumed large areas of dry grassland, vegetation, and protected Edelweiss flowers, spreading to the Penanjakan viewpoint of Mount Bromo. Park authorities closed the area to visitors until further notice, though no injuries or building evacuations have been reported.
In Jambi province, Sumatra, almost 6,000 firefighters have been deployed to combat separate blazes. Efforts there are complicated by deep peat soil, limited water supplies, difficult access, and strong winds, despite aerial support from three firefighting helicopters. Peatland fires are particularly difficult to extinguish because they can burn underground and reignite surface vegetation repeatedly. Historical records show that El Niño has triggered prolonged dry seasons and extreme drought, causing fires to spread widely over peatlands in Kalimantan and Sumatra.
Authorities have ruled out one of their primary firefighting tools. Weather-modification operations, commonly known as cloud-seeding, induce rainfall by dispersing salt particles into suitable clouds. Minister Chaniago confirmed that scientific monitoring found no rain-bearing clouds suitable for such operations in August 2026. Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni said authorities are now relying solely on water bombing and ground firefighting teams.
The broader context here involves a cascading set of climate and meteorological variables converging on one of the world's most fire-vulnerable regions. The BMKG's forecast that El Niño will persist through early 2027 suggests that the current emergency may not be a short-term crisis but a prolonged seasonal threat. BNPB's head, Suharyanto, called for strengthened synergy and coordinated action to prevent further spread, particularly in Central Kalimantan, where the agency has reinforced coordination in anticipation of the El Niño peak. A forest fire also broke out in Taddakong Village, South Sulawesi, on August 1, illustrating the geographic breadth of the fire risk Tempo.
Looking at what this means for regional stability and environmental policy, the stakes extend well beyond Indonesia's borders. Peatland fires release massive quantities of carbon dioxide and particulate matter, contributing to transboundary haze that affects neighboring Southeast Asian states. The 2026 fire season, if it continues on its current trajectory, could test regional diplomatic mechanisms for haze mitigation. The inability to deploy cloud-seeding due to the absence of suitable clouds also raises questions about the resilience of Indonesia's firefighting toolkit when faced with extreme El Niño conditions. With the peak months of August and September still unfolding, the current deployment of nearly 50,000 personnel may yet need to expand.
