Block Blast!+ Brings the World's Most Downloaded Mobile Game to Apple Arcade Ad-Free

Apple announced on August 11, 2026 that Block Blast!+, an ad-free version of the free-to-play puzzle game Block Blast!, will join its Apple Arcade subscription service on September 3, 2026. The title arrives alongside Art of Fauna: Cozy Puzzles+, a puzzle game that won the 2025 App Store Award for Cultural Impact, and three other titles: NFL Retro Bowl '27, Coloring Games for Families+, and Let's Play! Oink Games+ (Apple Newsroom).

Block Blast! was the most downloaded mobile game of 2025, a ranking confirmed by Apple's own internal data, which placed it as the most downloaded free iPhone game in the United States that year (TechCrunch). Business of Apps separately crowned it the most popular mobile game with 300 million downloads, surpassing the previous holder of that title, Roblox (Business of Apps). The game held the No. 1 ranking into early 2026, according to its developer Hungry Studio and third-party intelligence providers including Sensor Tower.

Lifetime install figures vary by source. Appfigures reports approximately 725 million lifetime installs, while other estimates put the number at 868 million. As of mid-2026, the game claimed 70 million daily active users and 300 million monthly active users worldwide. Downloads peaked in late 2024 at nearly 50 million per month and declined afterward.

Hungry Studio, which describes itself on its official website as "a global developer and publisher of mobile games" and the creator of Block Blast!, has pushed the game into mainstream cultural visibility. The studio promoted Block Blast! at Coachella in 2026. Apple's newsroom described Block Blast!+ as "bringing one of the most popular daily puzzle games to Apple Arcade." On the App Store, Block Blast! is listed under App ID 1617391485 with the description "A perfect mix of block and jigsaw puzzle games."

The free version of Block Blast! plays ads after every loss, a mechanic players have long complained about. The Apple Arcade version strips those ads entirely, which is the core value proposition of the Arcade platform: over 200 games, all ad-free and free of in-app purchases, for $6.99 per month. Apple Arcade can also be bundled into Apple One plans starting at $19.95 per month for individuals.

Apple's newsroom categorized the announcement as an UPDATE rather than a press release, positioning it within the Latest News feed alongside routine platform additions rather than as a standalone product launch. The accompanying headline named both Block Blast!+ and Art of Fauna: Cozy Puzzles+ as the headlining additions for the September 3 drop.

The broader context here is worth examining. Apple Arcade launched in 2019 with a premise that has not changed: a flat subscription fee for ad-free, IAP-free mobile games. What has shifted is the caliber of title the service can attract on launch day. Block Blast! arriving on Arcade with hundreds of millions of active users is a different kind of acquisition than an indie exclusive or a legacy port. It is a free-to-play giant being re-platformed behind a paywall, which raises a straightforward question about conversion: how many of those 300 million monthly active users will follow the game into a $6.99/month subscription to remove ads they have otherwise tolerated?

The install-data divergence between Appfigures (725 million) and the higher estimate of 868 million reflects a familiar measurement gap in mobile intelligence, where different providers apply different methodologies to deduplicate installs across devices and account for re-installs. Neither figure is necessarily wrong; they measure slightly different things. For a game of this scale, the delta between the two, roughly 143 million installs, is itself larger than the lifetime downloads of most mobile titles.

Hungry Studio's motivation is the one piece this announcement does not explicitly address. The free-to-play ad model has been generating revenue at enormous scale for a game sustaining 70 million daily active users. Moving an ad-free version behind Apple's subscription wall creates a parallel revenue stream rather than replacing the free version, which remains on the App Store. That dual-track approach, free with ads and paid without, mirrors what we have seen in streaming media and other subscription categories: the free tier and the paid tier coexist, and the operator monetizes both populations simultaneously.

For Apple, the addition serves a clear catalog-strategy purpose. Arcade's value proposition strengthens when it can offer a title that a large fraction of its potential subscriber base already knows and plays. Whether that translates into net-new subscriptions or simply retained existing ones is the metric that will determine whether this was a notable acquisition or a routine refresh.
