Google Announces Pixel Tag: A $29 Android Item Tracker with UWB Precision Finding

Google announced the Pixel Tag, a $29 Android item tracker, at its livestreamed "Made by Google '26" event on August 12, 2026. The device is the company's first-party entry into a category that Apple's AirTag has dominated since 2021, and it leverages Google's Find Hub network to locate lost items by tapping into Android devices worldwide TechCrunch.
The Pixel Tag connects via Bluetooth and Ultra Wideband for precision finding. It does not include NFC. A built-in speaker allows the tag to be rung directly from a Pixel Watch as well as from a phone, and the device is powered by a user-replaceable CR2032 coin cell battery rated for roughly a year of use. The Tag carries an IP67 rating for splash, water, and dust resistance.
Physically, the Pixel Tag is oval-shaped, measuring 1.1 inches wide, 1.8 inches high, and 0.2 inches deep, and weighing 0.4 ounces. It goes on sale November 11, 2026, priced at $29 for a single unit or $99 for a four-pack.
The Ultra Wideband support is notable because Google added UWB capability to its Find Hub network in mid-2025, roughly a year ahead of the Pixel Tag's retail availability TechTimes. That timing suggests Google has been methodically building the network infrastructure before shipping a first-party tracker to ride on it. UWB enables centimeter-level ranging between devices, which is what makes directional precision finding (the on-screen arrow guiding you to a lost item) practical rather than approximate.
There is also a Bluetooth-layer angle worth noting. Bluetooth 6.0 introduced a feature called Channel Sounding, which uses ranging UWB technology to enable better location tracking than prior Bluetooth-only approaches TechTimes. The Pixel Watch 3, released in 2025, was the first Android device to support Bluetooth Channel Sounding Android Authority. The Pixel Tag's ability to be rung from a Pixel Watch, combined with Channel Sounding support in that watch, points to a hardware ecosystem where precision finding can originate from the wrist, not just the phone.
The broader context here is that Google is arriving late to a category Apple opened up five years ago. The AirTag benefited from the sheer density of the Find My network, which uses hundreds of millions of Apple devices as passive detection nodes. Google's Find Hub network has a comparable installed base in Android devices worldwide, but the ecosystem question is whether third-party tracker makers, who have already built UWB-enabled tags on Apple's network, will compete with or complement Google's first-party offering. Google has not announced third-party integration details for the Pixel Tag beyond the Find Hub network itself.
From a competitive standpoint, the $29 single-unit price matches Apple's AirTag pricing exactly, and the $99 four-pack undercuts Apple's four-pack ($99 for four as well, though Apple offers that only in specific configurations). The feature set is close to parity: UWB precision finding, user-replaceable battery, built-in speaker, water resistance. The omission of NFC is a divergence. Apple's AirTag uses NFC to enable a lost-and-found flow where someone who finds a tag can tap it with their phone to see the owner's contact information. Google's decision to skip NFC means the Pixel Tag will rely on a different mechanism for the "found by a stranger" scenario, though Google has not yet detailed what that mechanism is.
The Pixel Watch integration is, in this author's view, the more interesting differentiator. Apple has never shipped a first-party mechanism for triggering AirTag rings from the wrist without involving an iPhone in the loop. Whether that matters to users in practice is an open question, but for the Android ecosystem, where smartwatch adoption has been uneven, giving the Pixel Watch a unique role in the tracker workflow adds a reason to own both devices.
What remains to be tested is real-world performance. Find Hub network density varies dramatically by region, and UWB precision finding requires a compatible nearby device, not just any Android phone. The Pixel Tag's value proposition depends on whether Google's network can match Apple's in the places where people actually lose things: airports, transit systems, and crowded public spaces in major cities. That is a hardware-distribution question as much as a software one, and the November launch will be the first real test.
For Android users who have been waiting for a first-party equivalent to the AirTag, the Pixel Tag checks most of the expected boxes. The details that will determine its long-term success, NFC-less lost-and-found flow and regional network density among them, will become clearer once the device ships in November.
