Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold Hands-On: Lighter, Brighter, Still Heavier Than Samsung

Google's Pixel 11 Pro Fold ships with a 6.5-inch exterior OLED display and an 8-inch flexible interior OLED, both essentially unchanged in size from the previous generation. The panels now reach 3,600 nits peak brightness, a 20 percent increase. The device weighs 239 grams, down 10 percent from the 258-gram Pixel 10 Pro Fold, and measures 10.1mm thick when closed (Engadget).
Google has narrowed the weight gap with Samsung's foldables but not closed it. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 weighs 201 grams; the Z Fold 8 Ultra, 215 grams. Both Samsung devices are also thinner than the Pixel 11 Pro Fold. Samsung unveiled its current foldable lineup at Galaxy Unpacked on July 22, 2026, with sales beginning August 7 in select markets (Samsung Newsroom). The Galaxy Z Fold 8 features a 5.5-inch cover screen and a 7.6-inch interior display with new display proportions.
Where Google pulls ahead is durability. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold carries an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, exceeding the IP48 rating on Samsung's Z Fold 8 line. Google has also switched to a new glass fibre rear panel material that the company says is nearly impossible to crack. Both claims are manufacturer assertions at this stage; independent drop and ingress testing will tell whether they hold up under real-world conditions.
The Tensor G6 processor powers the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, delivering up to 25 percent faster web browsing, 20 percent better power efficiency, and 15 percent faster app loading compared to the prior generation. A new image signal processor integrated into the G6 silicon enables Night Sight capture up to 4.5 times faster. Google's Titan M3 security chip is also on board (Engadget).
The camera system gets a new 48MP main sensor, described as the device's most significant imaging upgrade. Camera specifications beyond the main sensor were not detailed in the hands-on coverage.
Battery capacity actually decreased year-over-year, from 5,015mAh to 4,806mAh. Wired charging holds at 30 watts. Wireless charging jumps to 25 watts via Qi 2.2, up from 15 watts previously. The battery reduction is notable given that foldables already face physical constraints on cell size; the 20 percent power efficiency improvement from the Tensor G6 may partially offset the smaller capacity, but that is a claim that runtime testing will need to validate.
The Pixel 11 Pro Fold is priced at $1,799, undercutting the Galaxy Z Fold Ultra by $200 at $1,999 (Yahoo Tech). Google's foldable pricing has held at $1,799 since the original Pixel Fold launched at that figure in 2023. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold is expected to arrive toward the end of August 2026 alongside the rest of the Pixel 11 series (Tom's Guide).
The June 2026 Pixel Drop added new capabilities that may benefit the Pixel 11 Pro Fold at launch, including a new screen recording feature, text-to-video tools powered by Gemini Omni, and improved multitasking across Pixel devices (Google Blog).
Google's foldable trajectory now spans three hardware generations. The original Pixel Fold shipped in 2023, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold followed in August 2024 with pre-orders opening August 13 and retail availability September 4, and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold arrives with incremental but cumulative refinements: lighter chassis, brighter panels, faster silicon, tougher materials, and a meaningful wireless charging upgrade. The dimensional gap with Samsung's foldables has narrowed but persists, and the battery reduction is a trade-off that warrants scrutiny.
What Google has done is make the engineering choices that keep foldables moving toward mainstream viability. Durability improvements matter more for this form factor than for slab phones, and the IP68 rating plus glass fibre back address two of the most common failure modes. The Tensor G6's efficiency gains, if they materialize in real-world testing, could let Google shrink the battery without sacrificing runtime. The $200 price advantage over Samsung's Ultra is not trivial. Whether that combination is enough to shift buyer preference in a category where Samsung still holds the thinner, lighter position is the question the market will answer this autumn.
