iOS 27 Arrives Sept. 14: Storage, Backup and Update Paths for the Siri AI Release

iOS 27 will be available as a free software update on Monday, September 14. The release is expected at around 10:00 a.m. on that date. MacRumors

The timing puts the software out within days of new hardware. Apple debuted the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026, alongside the iPhone Duo, Apple Watch Ultra 4, Apple Watch Series 12 with an all-new Health Sensing System, AirPods 5 with open-ear Active Noise Cancellation, and advances to health and fitness capabilities using Apple Intelligence.

For existing phones, the headline change is Siri. Apple states that iOS 27 features all-new Siri AI powered by Apple Intelligence. The update includes a new Siri app, a more readable design, faster performance, and new child safety features. Engadget

That intelligence layer has a hardware cutoff. Apple Intelligence and Siri AI in iOS 27 are available on iPhone 16 models or later. The same Siri AI features were made available for developer testing across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, and visionOS 27. One Apple Intelligence function called out for iOS 27 is the ability to split bills using Apple Cash and Apple Intelligence.

Preparation starts with storage and power. Users should have around 18 to 25GB of free space available for the download and temporary files. Fifty percent battery should be enough to complete the update, but it is safer to keep the iPhone plugged in while updating. Keep the phone connected to Wi-Fi during the install.

Do the unglamorous work first. Back up the iPhone via iCloud at Settings > Apple Account > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now, or back up to a Mac or Windows PC. Have Apple ID credentials handy before installing to avoid being locked out. If the phone is already on iOS 26.6, install that indexing update first. It is intended to make the shift to the Siri changes in iOS 27 smoother.

There are two update tracks. To update manually, go to the Settings app, tap General, then tap Software Update, and wait on that page for the iOS 27 release to appear. Automatic updates can be configured at Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates. With Automatically Install enabled, the iPhone will not install immediately upon availability. It will update when charging and connected to Wi-Fi overnight.

Expect a delay on the automatic path. Notification of an automatic installation could arrive days or weeks after the update becomes available. That stagger is normal. It spreads load and crash reports.

Desktop update remains supported. To update with the Finder, connect the device to a computer, select the device, click General, then click Check for Update, then click Download and Update. To update with iTunes, connect the device to a computer, click the device button in the iTunes toolbar, click the Summary tab, then click Check for Update. iPhone and iPad can download and prepare software updates when connected using Wi-Fi and when connected using cellular. If an iPhone or iPad will not update, the pending package can be removed via Settings > General > [Device] Storage, selecting the update, then Delete Update.

The broader context here is migration management, not just new features. Pre-indexing on 26.6, a large staging footprint, an overnight charging requirement for automatic installs, and a multi-week notification window all point to an update with substantial on-device model and index changes. For fleets and family devices, that argues for manual sequencing. Update a secondary device first. Confirm backup completion and Apple Account access before touching a primary phone. The payoff, on the long arc, is practical. A more capable local assistant, clearer legibility, and bill splitting inside Apple Cash are small efficiencies that compound across daily use.
