Apple has released the public versions of iOS 27, macOS 27, iPadOS 27, watchOS 27 and visionOS 27. The releases arrived on September 14, 2026, with macOS 27 carrying the name macOS Golden Gate Engadget. Apple had confirmed the September 14 date during its Surprise and Shine event Cult of Mac.

The major new feature across the releases is Siri AI, a revamp of Apple's virtual assistant. Siri AI can pull personal information from various apps and use on-screen content to add context to responses. Apple has introduced a new Siri app for the capability, and notes that usage limits may apply.

Availability is gated by language, hardware and region. At first, Siri AI will only be available on supported devices set to English. Apple will add support for French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish next month.

The hardware cutoff is narrower than the OS cutoff. iOS 27 installs on iPhone 11 series and newer devices, as well as second- or third-generation iPhone SE. Siri AI will only work on devices that support Apple Intelligence, including iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 models or later. That leaves a large installed base able to run the new OS without access to its headline assistant.

Regional availability is also split. Siri AI and features that rely on it across iOS, iPadOS and watchOS will not be available in the European Union at the outset. Apple says it is working to find a path forward that preserves users' privacy and security in the EU. The overhauled assistant is on hold in China, where Apple says it is navigating regulatory requirements.

That regulatory friction has been building for months. Apple said in June that the Digital Markets Act prevented it from shipping Siri AI in the European Union with iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 Apple, and the European Commission said Apple had failed to make its AI tool comply with EU regulations Reuters. In China, Apple Intelligence has been registered with the cyberspace regulator Mashable, though the September release status remains on hold.

Beyond the assistant, Apple tweaked the Liquid Glass design language to make it more customizable and readable. Apple says the new operating systems include performance improvements that make app launches up to 30 percent faster.

iOS 27 carries several functional additions separate from Siri AI. It adds new AI photo editing options and support for custom EQ on AirPods. It adds a bill-splitting feature in the US and expands parental controls. It also adds a way to use the same phone number across two iPhones, a change relevant to users who carry separate work and personal hardware or who are migrating devices.

The broader context here is fragmentation, and administrators and developers will feel it first. One OS version now implies three different capability matrices: language locale, SoC and entitlement tier, and jurisdiction. Personal-context queries that span apps plus on-screen grounding create new permission and data-flow questions for enterprise review, particularly where usage limits and logging behavior are not yet documented in detail. For consumer deployment, the practical effect is a staged rollout inside what looks like a single release.

In this author's view, that staging is worth watching more closely than the feature list. Apple shipped the platform widely while holding back the assistant narrowly, which keeps the upgrade incentive intact without forcing regulatory or capacity issues on day one. If personal retrieval plus on-screen context works reliably on supported hardware, it gives Apple a path to make the assistant useful in everyday workflows rather than as a separate prompt box. The open questions are how quickly additional languages, EU availability and China clearance follow, and how consistent third-party app integration proves under real use.
