Valve Holds Steam Deck 2 for Right Chip as 2026 Lineup Ships

Valve launched its 2026 hardware lineup comprising the Steam Controller, Steam Machine, and Steam Frame. Valve designer Pierre-Loup Griffais said the company is still figuring out "how and when" to deliver a next-generation Steam Deck handheld, according to the most recent account The Verge.

Valve has said a Steam Deck 2 will happen but will not arrive until Valve finds the right chip. Griffais said Valve does not want more performance in a sequel at a significant cost to power efficiency and battery life. It wants a performance leap instead. The chip does not exist yet.

That position has been consistent over time. In September 2023, Griffais told The Verge not to expect a faster Steam Deck in the next couple of years, suggesting 2025 or 2026 as possible timing The Verge. In November 2025, Griffais opened a Verge interview by saying "Steam Deck is not what we're here to talk about today." The Verge interviewed Griffais and Yazan Aldehayyat about why there is no news about Steam Deck 2.

Earlier this year, Griffais told IGN that Valve was "hard at work" on the next handheld. No release window has been given. He repeated the "how and when" formulation in the latest interview cycle around the 2026 lineup launch.

The 2026 launch is happening under supply pressure. Valve delayed and repriced the Steam Machine and Steam Frame due to a memory shortage. Valve priced the Steam Frame headset at $1,059. Valve also states that Steam Deck OLED may be out of stock intermittently in some regions due to memory and storage shortages.

When IGN asked if the current hardware shortage impacted Valve's thinking about putting a Steam Deck 2 into development, Griffais answered "Not really."

The current specifications are public. Valve specifies that Steam Deck is a Zen 2 + RDNA 2 powerhouse. Valve lists the Steam Deck as featuring an OLED screen, better battery life, and faster WiFi. Valve states that its Steam Hardware family officially expands in 2026. Valve states that the Steam Controller comes with magnetic thumbsticks using TMR technology. Valve states that Steam Frame includes next-generation magnetic thumbsticks for precision and capacitive finger sensing. The Steam Frame is Valve's newest VR headset. Valve software developers Pierre-Loup Griffais and Jeff Leinbaugh discussed the Steam Frame launch with Tom's Hardware Tom's Hardware. Griffais is one of the architects behind SteamOS and the Steam Deck.

The broader context here is familiar to anyone who has shipped power-constrained hardware. A handheld has to balance compute, power efficiency and battery life together, and a small gain that costs too much battery is a poor trade. In this author's view, Valve is keeping those constraints fixed and waiting for silicon that moves the performance curve outward, rather than shipping a modest bump that would fragment the Deck performance target developers already optimize against.

Worth flagging for developers and technical buyers is what that patience enables. A stable Deck target plus new endpoints in the living room and VR gives SteamOS more places to go without forcing an early compatibility break. My own kids grew up in the stretch when a family PC, then a console, then a phone each reset expectations about where games lived. The long arc favored platforms that preserved software continuity while hardware caught up. In this author's view, Valve is betting the same way here.
