Anthropic Folds Chat and Cowork Into a Single Claude Workspace
Anthropic is merging its Claude chat and Cowork front ends into one unified interface.
The new window brings chat, Cowork and Artifacts together in the same place. Artifacts is Claude's interactive workspace feature. Claude now routes a request to the appropriate mode itself, without requiring users to switch tabs or windows. TechCrunch
That routing decision covers an expanded set of production artifacts. Users can ask Claude to create, edit and present slides directly in the flow of a conversation. Generated presentations can be downloaded as PDF or PowerPoint. A parallel Docs feature supports longer form work, letting users create sections, ask questions and comment on completed parts alongside Claude. TechCrunch
The implementation is explicitly cross device. Users can share a Claude generated document or slide with a link and continue editing on a phone. A document started on desktop can be monitored from the mobile app as Claude progresses through the task. For teams already passing drafts between desktop review and mobile triage, that continuity removes a small but persistent source of friction.
Rollout is tiered. The document and slide features are coming first to Claude Pro and Max plans across web, desktop and mobile over the coming weeks, with extension to free and team tiers planned later. TechCrunch
The change builds on several existing primitives. Claude Design, introduced in April by Anthropic Labs for website and prototype work, now operates anywhere within Claude and is positioned as a way to collaborate on polished visual output including designs, prototypes, slides and one pagers. Anthropic Projects provide a complementary scoping mechanism, with each project able to hold uploaded documents, additional context and focused chats. Two recent integration points point in the same direction. Anthropic's Claude for Excel and Claude for PowerPoint add ins can now share the full context of a conversation, according to September 15 release notes. Looking at what this means for daily use, the important shift is from explicit mode selection to delegated orchestration. Chatbots trained users to pick the tool first, then prompt. Cowork style agents inverted that, asking for permission to act on files and tools. A single surface with automatic routing collapses that choice. The user states intent in natural language. The system decides whether that intent needs a short answer, a persistent artifact, code execution, or a longer background run. For expert users, the test will be predictability. Automatic routing only saves time if the boundary between chat and agentic action is legible, interruptible and cheap to correct.
Worth flagging in that regard is how much state now has to travel with the conversation. Multi file attachments, project context, generated docs and slides, and Office add in context all increase the value of a long lived session, and also increase the cost when routing goes wrong or context overflows. Anthropic's constraint that attached files must fit within the context window remains the hard limit here. The vendors that handle overflow gracefully, with clear provenance for which files and threads informed a doc or deck, will earn more trust from technical teams than those that simply accept larger inputs.
In this author's view, the direction is sound and familiar. The PC era consolidated discrete utilities into suites. The cloud era consolidated suites into collaborative canvases. The current wave is consolidating prompts, agents and artifacts into workspaces where the output, not the chat transcript, is the persistent object. Watching my own children adopt these tools, they rarely talk about models or agents. They talk about whether the deck or doc was usable. That is the bar this unified Claude will be judged against. If it shortens the path from question to reviewable, shareable work across desktop and phone, it will have improved the daily workflow it targets.
