Trump Says He Is Creating an 'AI Force' and Plans AI Czar

President Donald Trump said on Saturday, September 19, 2026, that he is creating an "AI Force." He said he will announce his pick to run it "in the near future" and that he plans to name an AI czar. CNN

Trump compared the creation of the AI Force to the creation of the Space Force. He wrote that the United States will not hinder or stifle the growth of the AI industry, but will cherish, help and watch over it. Engadget

In a separate post, Trump published a poll proposing a rebranding of artificial intelligence as "extreme intelligence" or "supreme intelligence." The poll language was reported alongside the AI Force statement. Engadget

The AI czar plan was reported the same day as the AI Force statement. Reporting describes both as announcements of intent, with personnel decisions to follow. The structure, authorities, staffing and budget for either entity were described only in those terms.

The statements follow earlier remarks on AI oversight. Trump said the United States already has guardrails in place to regulate and prosecute AI companies. He also said "very negative forces" were raising exaggerated concerns over AI. Reuters

The announcement sits alongside existing federal AI policy infrastructure. That education track is administered through the White House Task Force on Artificial Intelligence Education, which implements policy and coordinates federal efforts related to AI education and covers actions outlined in the President's AI Education Executive Order. Trump called for the United States to promote AI literacy and proficiency among America's youth and educators.

The Task Force is chaired by the Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy. Its members include the Secretary of Agriculture, the Secretary of Labor, the Secretary of Education, the Secretary of Energy, the Director of the National Science Foundation, the Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy, the Special Advisor for AI & Crypto, the Assistant to the President for Policy, and the Assistant to the President for the Office of the First Lady. The broader context here is organizational rather than technical. For technology professionals, model architectures, training runs and inference stacks do not change on the basis of a name. Procurement authority, evaluation standards, data access, compute siting and export controls do. The name is the easy part.

Looking at what this means for operators and builders, the operative questions are where an AI Force would live, what acquisition or coordination power it would hold, and how an AI czar would interact with OSTP, the existing education Task Force and agency chief AI officers. A military service, a joint coordination body and a White House policy office impose very different constraints on vendors, researchers and enterprise adopters. Until charters and reporting lines are published, teams should treat both labels as placeholders.

In this author's view, worth flagging is the continuity in the policy signal. Cherish, help and watch over is a pro-deployment posture paired with a claim that guardrails for prosecution already exist. That combination, if carried into rulemaking and contracting, favors scaled deployment, private data-center buildout and AI integration into education and federal workflows, with enforcement handled through existing statutes rather than new AI-specific restrictions. My own kids learned to treat new platforms as utilities first and policy objects second. Enterprise adoption often works the same way. The technology gets used, then governed.

What this enables, over a longer arc, is clearer still. A centralized point of contact for frontier-model policy, shared evaluation infrastructure and AI literacy programs could lower integration costs for schools, agencies and small firms that lack dedicated ML teams. The risk is duplication and unclear ownership. The opportunity is less friction between research, deployment and workforce training.
