Apple's Siri AI home hub, internally designated J490, may be almost ready to launch. The device is now in wide testing in Apple employees' homes ahead of release, according to reporting attributed to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Engadget

The hardware is a smart display positioned against Amazon's Echo Show and Google's Nest Hub. It will either sit on a stand resembling a sliced-in-half HomePod mini or attach to a wall. Reports describe a 7-inch square touch-screen display. 9to5Mac

That display is said to include a camera, microphones and Wi-Fi connectivity, with an interface described as a mashup of iOS, tvOS and watchOS. Setup and some tasks will sync with an iPhone. The system is said to use facial recognition to identify who is looking at the screen and personalize apps, notes, calendar appointments, news, music and podcasts.

On software, the hub runs an entirely new operating system built on tvOS and is built around Siri AI. 9to5Mac Apple has said Siri AI requires a home hub such as HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini, or Apple TV 4K with the latest operating system software. Apple Its new HomePod documentation describes HomePod as connecting to and controlling Matter-enabled accessories and serving as an essential home hub for remote access. Apple

The schedule has slipped before. The J490 was originally scheduled for spring 2025 but was postponed to finish work on a new Siri. Bloomberg Current reporting targets release around iOS 27 this fall. 9to5Mac One July report put that window as soon as October. MacRumors Apple Stores are separately preparing significant changes for new Home product launches, and refreshed Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini models are expected to support Siri AI. 9to5Mac The hub itself has circulated under the informal names HomePad and HomePod Touch, while HomePod mini 2 is described as gaining a new chip, audio improvements and Siri AI.

The Siri program behind it remains in flux. Apple is planning two new versions of Siri for iOS 26.4 and iOS 27. Bloomberg In March 2025, the executive overseeing Siri told staff that delays to key features were "ugly and embarrassing." Apple is also developing an AI server chip with Broadcom. At the application layer, Siri AI is expected to work with more than 300,000 apps at launch and perform actions across Apple and third-party applications. Reuters Apple published a Newsroom update on Sept. 14, 2026 titled "Siri AI, a profoundly more capable and personal assistant, is here." Its Newsroom list as of Sept. 21, 2026 contains no announcement about a Siri home hub smart display.

The broader context here is familiar to anyone who watched the PC, mobile and cloud transitions. Apple is late to a category it helped define with HomePod voice control and HomeKit, and it is trying to re-enter through the assistant rather than the speaker. In my view, that ordering is correct for technical reasons. A stationary display lives or dies on intent parsing, cross-app action completion, multi-user identification and low-friction setup with a phone already in the pocket. Specs matter less than whether Siri can reliably chain those steps without hand-holding.

Worth flagging for enterprise and platform developers is the tvOS base and the Matter path. A tvOS-derived OS gives Apple a known media, provisioning and accessory stack to extend, while Matter support keeps the hub inside a standards-based control plane rather than a closed accessory silo. If Siri AI in iOS 27 delivers usable cross-app actions at the scale described, the hub becomes a shared household endpoint for calendar, messaging, media and home control. If it does not, no industrial design will compensate. The employee home testing phase suggests Apple understands that distinction. Over the long arc, useful ambient interfaces tend to find adoption quietly, once the friction drops below the threshold where people have to think about them.
