Qualcomm announced Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 at its annual Snapdragon Summit, positioning improved personalization for AI agents as the central task for its next flagship tier. TechCrunch

Qualcomm said the new chips aid improved personalization for AI agents. The implementation centers on sensing hubs capable of running small models of up to 200 million parameters. Those hubs handle persistent, low-power contextual work without routing every interaction through the main compute complex.

The sensing hub enables smartphones to run a personal scribe locally and differentiate between speakers. In practice, that means transcription and speaker attribution stay on device. The hub can also build memory based on usage for better suggestions for automating tasks. Qualcomm said the new chip can run a complete voice-in and voice-out agent.

That last detail matters for system architects. A complete voice-in and voice-out agent collapses speech recognition, reasoning over local context, and speech synthesis into a single on-device loop. It reduces dependence on network round trips for routine agent interactions and keeps personal audio and usage-derived memory closer to the user.

The two SKUs diverge on inference headroom. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 includes a new accelerator element designed to run models more efficiently. Qualcomm did not frame it as a raw throughput play. The description points to performance per watt for sustained agent and sensing workloads.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 can run a 30-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model locally. That figure invites direct comparison. Apple released a 20-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model at its Worldwide Developer Conference in June. For developers targeting flagship Android, the 30-billion-parameter ceiling defines what can be held resident, sharded across memory, and invoked without cloud fallback.

Imaging and audio get parallel upgrades, both tied to AI processing. The Extreme version supports 8K video recording at 60fps and 4K recording at 240fps for slow-motion. It also enables the Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec for pro-level recording. Both chips use AI to boost vocals and reduce noise.

Both chips include Qualcomm's voice bubble technology that isolates the user's noise during calls. The feature is distinct from general noise reduction. It creates an isolation zone around the user during calls, preserving voice intelligibility in crowded acoustic environments.

On the device side, Motorola announced the Motorola Signature 27 smartphone powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. That gives Qualcomm an immediate flagship outlet for the Extreme part and gives developers a concrete target for testing larger local models and the new video pipeline.

Looking at what this means for handset design, the split between a 200-million-parameter sensing tier and a 30-billion-parameter expert tier is the important architectural signal. It separates continuous personalization from episodic reasoning. The sensing hub learns routines and maintains speaker-aware local state. The large model handles complex prompts when invoked. In this author's view, that division is pragmatic. It acknowledges that agents are not one model but a system of models with different latency, power, and memory budgets.

Worth flagging for software teams is the shift in where product differentiation will sit. If transcription, speaker separation, usage memory, and voice synthesis run locally by default, the baseline agent experience becomes less about cloud model access and more about integration with on-device permissions, sensors, and app actions. The long arc here is encouraging. Smaller, specialized models running continuously, paired with larger models available on demand, could make phones more useful assistants without making every request a network transaction.
