Switzerland was not spared. Beznau in central Switzerland recorded 36.9°C on 19 June, setting a new national temperature record for the month of June. The UK Met Office had already warned by 23 June that temperatures could reach 40°C — a threshold that, if confirmed, would represent only the second time in British instrumental history that mark has been breached.

Scale and Trajectory

DW's live tracking data put the number of Europeans exposed to temperatures above 35°C at least 101 million. France and Spain were the most acutely affected countries, with Copernicus Earth Observation imagery documenting the anomaly's footprint across the continent's western flank during the third decade of June. The event was forecast to peak around 27 June, with extreme temperatures above 36°C broadly and locally exceeding 40°C.

This was not 2026's first extreme heat episode. An earlier heatwave struck western Europe in the second half of May, primarily between 21 and 30 May, arriving with temperatures running 10–15°C above seasonal norms. That event caused several deaths and was notably early in the calendar year, as documented by Copernicus. The May episode set the context for what followed: two major heat events within six weeks, the second more intense and spatially broader than the first.

Taken together, the Copernicus Climate Change Service recorded June–August 2026 as Europe's warmest summer on record — a designation that carries weight given the length and density of instrumental data now underpinning European climate archives.

What the Pattern Signals

The sequence — an early May onset, a late-June surge into record territory, national benchmarks broken across at least three countries — aligns with the mode shift that climate scientists have been tracking in European summer circulation. Heat domes are arriving earlier in the season and intensifying faster. The May event reaching 10–15°C above normal is not a marginal anomaly; it is the kind of departure that, even a decade ago, would have been considered a multi-century return period.

For emergency managers and public health systems, the operational implications are concrete. The 2003 European heatwave — which killed an estimated 70,000 people — prompted a wave of national heat action plans, early warning systems, and cooling centre networks. France's Plan Canicule, introduced after 2003, was activated this June. That it was not sufficient to prevent 18 deaths does not negate its effect; it does raise the question of whether plans calibrated to 2003-era temperature ranges remain adequate for a regime in which Paris records 40.9°C in June rather than August.

The UK's position is worth noting separately. The 36.7°C Somerset reading came before the forecast peak, meaning the final UK June record for 2026 may be higher still. British infrastructure — housing stock, rail networks, urban drainage — was not designed for sustained heat at this level, a gap that was exposed during the July 2022 event when rail lines buckled and hospitals reported heat-related surges. That structural exposure has not been resolved in the intervening four years.

For energy system operators, the combination of peak cooling demand and the disruption already visible in France's grid — power cuts during the acute phase — is a stress test that will inform capacity planning discussions heading into future summers. The window between a heat event and the policy response that follows it is where durable change either happens or doesn't.
