Gaza Strikes Kill Seven as Ceasefire Death Toll Mounts

At least seven Palestinians were killed and more than 10 wounded in Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip on September 30, 2026.
Six of the dead were killed in an Israeli drone attack on a passenger van in Tal al-Hawa in southwest Gaza City, according to medical and civil defence sources cited in the September 30 reporting. The Palestine Red Crescent Society said its crews transported 13 wounded people to al-Quds Hospital after that strike. The van attack was the single deadliest incident of the day. Al Jazeera
Other strikes hit residential and displacement sites. An Israeli attack on a residential apartment near al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City killed at least one woman. In southern Gaza, an Israeli drone hit a shelter housing displaced people, wounding four Palestinians, including two children. Southeast of Deir el-Balah in central Gaza, Israeli forces seriously wounded two Palestinians. Israeli tank fire was also reported in southern Khan Younis.
Gaza's Ministry of Health said the bodies of at least nine people arrived at hospitals in the 24 hours before September 30. The ministry put the number wounded in that 24-hour period at 31. Since the Israel-Hamas ceasefire began in October 2025, at least 1,431 people have been killed and at least 5,026 wounded, according to the ministry. The cumulative toll from Israel's war on Gaza since October 2023 stands at at least 74,032 killed and 175,142 wounded, health officials said. Al Jazeera
The casualty figures coincide with continued physical destruction. An analysis by the United Nations Satellite Centre in August 2026 found that destroyed structures across Gaza had increased by 9 percent since the ceasefire took effect. About 82 percent of structures in Gaza, roughly 200,000 buildings, have been damaged since the start of the war, according to the United Nations.
The September 30 deaths follow a pattern of smaller-scale lethal incidents reported through September. On September 28, Israeli strikes killed at least two people in Gaza, including a woman killed in a strike on the rooftop of her building in Gaza City that also wounded her husband and others. On September 23, Israeli airstrikes killed at least four Palestinians, including in a strike on a vehicle in western Khan Younis. Reuters Reuters
Structural failure has added a separate toll. The collapse of an apartment block in Gaza City left 21 people dead. Authorities subsequently issued an evacuation order for 255 other buildings. Reuters
The Israeli military, in statements without confirmed publication dates and therefore treated here as background, said it conducted strikes on Hamas launchers located in a humanitarian zone in southern Gaza, located and eliminated underground tunnel routes and rocket production facilities, and completed a targeted operation against a Hamas command center in Kamal Adwan Hospital in Jabaliya. It also said it conducted a series of strikes on targets in the area of Shaboura in the southern Gaza Strip and that those strikes had concluded. IDF Chief of the General Staff LTG Eyal Zamir stated the IDF objectives are the return of the hostages, the decisive defeat of Hamas, and the intensification of strikes against its capabilities. The broader context here is a ceasefire that has not stopped killing or destruction. Eleven months after the October 2025 agreement, daily drone strikes, tank fire and airstrikes continue to produce civilian casualties centered on Gaza City, Deir el-Balah and Khan Younis. The geography matters. Tal al-Hawa, al-Shifa, displacement shelters and the southern humanitarian zone are densely populated. Strikes there carry predictable risks for noncombatants, including children and displaced families, even when the stated targets are vehicles, launchers or command infrastructure.
Looking at what this means for diplomacy, the numbers themselves have become the negotiation environment. More than 1,400 dead and more than 5,000 wounded since the ceasefire, plus a 9 percent rise in destroyed structures during a formal truce, leave mediators with little to point to as restraint. For humanitarian planners, the combination of ongoing strikes and 200,000 damaged buildings, compounded by secondary deaths from collapses and 255 evacuation orders, narrows every option for shelter, triage and repair. The question now is whether the ceasefire framework can contain violations or whether it functions as cover for a lower-intensity campaign.
