Kalshi Probes Winning Bets on Zacharia Press Secretary Pick

Kalshi is investigating suspicious trades on its platform that correctly predicted President Donald Trump's pick for White House press secretary, according to reporting on Oct. 9, 2026. Wall Street Journal
Trump announced Katie Zacharia as White House press secretary on Oct. 9, 2026. Reuters Zacharia will succeed Karoline Leavitt in the role. Associated Press Leavitt left the position in August. The New York Times
Zacharia is 41 years old. She is a communications adviser to Trump Media, which operates the Truth Social platform. The New York Times She worked briefly at the Department of Homeland Security. CNN
The contract at issue sits in Kalshi's market titled 'Who will be Trump's next Press Secretary?' The market's resolution rule provides for a Yes settlement if the first new person to become White House Press Secretary after issuance is Katie Zacharia.
Pricing ahead of the announcement had pointed elsewhere. Anna Kelly was the frontrunner in Polymarket's "Who will Trump pick as the next Press Secretary?" market at 19%, based on an Aug. 12 print. Around the same window, Kelly led Kalshi odds for Trump's next press secretary with more than 40% implied chance, according to Aug. 13 reporting. Zacharia was not the consensus name in either book at that point.
This is the second White House-linked trading incident to touch Kalshi this year. President Donald Trump's teleprompter operator came under CFTC probe over potential insider trading, as reported July 16. Reuters That case centered on Kalshi's mention markets, which include contracts that let traders wager on whether a specific word or phrase will be said. Kalshi froze about $90,000 in profits belonging to teleprompter operator Perez and banned Perez from betting on Kalshi. NPR The operator had made more than $100,000 in betting tied to Trump, and Kalshi said it was introducing new security measures to combat insider trading. ABC News
The broader context here is adverse selection in low-liquidity, high-information-asymmetry event contracts. Personnel markets have a small informed set, a binary resolution, and a sharp jump from low prior to 100 on announcement. Surveillance therefore turns on timing, sizing, account clustering, and entry relative to the public order book, not just profitability. A correct tail bet is not itself evidence of misuse. The question is whether fills were inconsistent with the prevailing implied probability and whether flow concentrated in accounts with proximity to the decision.
Looking at what this means for market structure, the Perez precedent matters. A freeze, a ban, and a controls upgrade set the template for enforcement without a regulator filing. The risk for designated contract markets listing political and White House-adjacent events is repeat headline risk. Each incident tightens the trade-off between listing granular, newsworthy contracts that attract retail volume and policing leakage where edge comes from access rather than analysis. For professional participants, the signal is to price the possibility of informed flow wider in personnel and mention markets, and to expect post-resolution holds and reviews when settlement prints against the prior favorite.
