Europe's 2026 Wildfire Season Tracks Toward Another Record as Wet Winter Turns to Fuel Surplus

Wildfires have burned 28,000 hectares in France and 50,000 hectares in Spain as of 1 July 2026, more than double the seasonal average for both countries, according to The Guardian. The figures, drawn from European estimates, mark the latest data point in a summer that has already produced a mass evacuation in southwestern France and a large blaze in Portugal.
A wildfire in southern France forced 10,000 people from their homes and injured 16, including four firefighters, Reuters reported on 6 July, with the fire scorching roughly 4,600 hectares in the foothills. The Connexion France noted more significant fires have already been recorded this year than in all of 2025 — itself the worst fire season on record for the EU, per Copernicus. In Portugal, more than 1,200 firefighters backed by nearly 400 support personnel battled a blaze that burned across 12,000 hectares, AP News reported. In Spain, Euronews reported Cantabria has suffered the worst damage, as the country enters what Euronews called its highest wildfire risk period.
The proximate driver is a pair of heatwaves: a freak episode in late May followed by an even harsher one at the end of June. Attribution scientists concluded the record June heat across Europe would have been "virtually impossible" without warming caused by fossil fuel combustion, per the Guardian's reporting and an earlier Guardian analysis. Daytime highs during the event were found to be ten times more likely than two decades ago; night-time lows, a hundred times more likely — a gap that matters because elevated overnight minimums deny vegetation and soil the recovery window that historically limited fire spread and firefighter exhaustion alike.
What makes the current season notable is not simply heat but the sequence that preceded it. The Iberian peninsula came off an exceptionally wet winter with unusually high river flow, and Copernicus data cited by the Guardian show surface soil moisture in Spain running above the seasonal average from March through May. That moisture initially suppressed fire potential by boosting vegetation water content and fuel growth. But the water content in that vegetation dropped away during the extended June heat, leaving what researchers describe as an extensive surplus of dry fuel primed to burn. Julia Miller, a climate scientist at the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF and lead author of a study published in Nature Communications Earth & Environment on compounding wildfire risks, has documented this wet-spring-to-hot-summer sequence as a factor behind Spain's record 2025 fire season, a pattern also flagged in the Guardian's earlier reporting.
That 2025 season set the baseline against which this year is being measured, and it was severe by any metric. Copernicus's Emergency Management Service recorded 1,079,538 hectares burnt across 25 EU member states, the most severe season on record for the bloc. Europe as a whole burned 1,034,552 hectares, surpassing the previous continental record of roughly 988,524 hectares set in 2017, according to Copernicus's climate service. Spain and Portugal together lost more than 640,000 hectares last year, with eight deaths and over 35,000 evacuations, AP reported — a toll that followed an earlier fatal blaze in July 2025 that killed two people and spread at 28 kph through mostly grain fields, per AP's coverage that month. By mid-August 2025, Spain had deployed 500 additional troops to fire lines and EFFIS put cumulative burned area in the country at 158,000 hectares, AP News noted. Eurozone-wide, Reuters tallied nearly 440,000 hectares burned by mid-August, double the seasonal average, following an early-season surge that saw 1,118 fires detected by 8 July compared with 716 a year earlier, per Reuters.
The pattern is not uniform across the continent, which is itself instructive. EFFIS, which maps fires above roughly 30 hectares, put Finland's 2026 burned area at just 32 hectares against a 2006–2025 average of 198.35 hectares. Northern Europe's fire regime remains bound by fuel moisture and forest composition in ways southern Europe's Mediterranean climate zone is not, and that asymmetry is precisely why attention concentrates on Iberia and southern France even as burned-area statistics get compiled continent-wide.
The Guardian's framing centers on adaptation failure rather than the fires themselves — the argument that infrastructure, land management, and emergency response have not kept pace with a climate regime now producing compound wet-then-hot sequences as a matter of course rather than anomaly. Whether that argument gains policy traction likely depends less on any single season's totals than on whether 2026 confirms 2025 as a new baseline rather than an outlier. Tour de France organizers banned fans from a stage finale because of fire risk, AP reported — a small but telling sign of how routinely fire danger is now factored into ordinary summer planning across the region.
