Atlas users have roughly a month from the announcement to adapt workflows built around a standalone browser before it stops functioning, and OpenAI has not detailed a bulk-export or settings-transfer process in the material reviewed here. Whether browser memories, saved sessions, and any custom configurations carry over cleanly into the new desktop app's embedded browser is not yet documented in OpenAI's public notes.

The broader pattern here is one OpenAI has followed before with other product lines: ship a standalone experiment, learn from real usage, then absorb the capability into the core ChatGPT surface rather than sustaining a parallel app indefinitely. A standalone browser competing against Chrome and Edge on their own turf is a genuinely hard distribution problem — users don't switch default browsers lightly, a friction Google, Microsoft, and Mozilla have each spent decades managing. Building the browsing agent into a product users already open dozens of times a day sidesteps that switching cost entirely, even if it forecloses the option of ChatGPT ever becoming someone's default browser outright.

For developers and IT teams evaluating Codex-based workflows, the consolidation is arguably the more consequential change of the two.
