Xiaomi has unveiled the SkyNomad N90 Max, its first extended-range electric vehicle, alongside the smaller SkyNomad N70 and N70 Max. The announcement caps weeks of public visibility for the N90 Max, which was displayed at Xiaomi's Industrial Park in Beijing ahead of its official launch event Reuters.

The N90 Max claims a range of over 1,705 km, or roughly 1,059 miles The Verge. That figure places it in the upper tier of extended-range EVs, a category that pairs a battery-electric drivetrain with an onboard combustion generator to address charging-infrastructure gaps over long distances.

The three-vehicle lineup matters for what it says about Xiaomi's automotive strategy. By launching a full range from the outset, all sharing the same extended-range platform, the company is not testing the water with a single model. It is building a product family, which in automotive manufacturing means amortizing platform development costs across multiple vehicles and price points.

The extended-range approach itself is a deliberate engineering trade-off. Pure battery-electric vehicles face two persistent constraints: charging time on long routes and infrastructure density outside urban centers. An onboard generator addresses both, at the cost of added mechanical complexity and emissions. Xiaomi's choice to make extended-range the foundation of its SkyNomad lineup, rather than offering it as a variant, signals where the company sees the largest addressable market.

The cabin features deserve specific attention. Rotating front seats are not new in concept but remain rare in production vehicles because they complicate crash structure and seatbelt anchoring. A slide-out center armrest that doubles as a table, zero-gravity second-row seats with footrests, an integrated fridge, and overhead speakers together describe an interior that prioritizes time spent parked or camping over traditional driving ergonomics.

The Camping Edition's pop-up top and rooftop bed platform place it in a small but growing category of factory-built camper EVs. Most camping conversions are aftermarket, and a manufacturer-integrated solution means the structural and electrical systems are designed for that use case from the start.

The broader context here is a Chinese EV market in which dozens of manufacturers compete on feature density and price. Xiaomi's differentiator is not any single specification but the combination: a 1,705 km range claim, a cabin designed for stationary living, a factory camping variant, and a shared platform across three models. Whether the range figure holds under independent testing, and whether the rotating-seat and pop-top features clear regulatory approval in export markets, are the practical questions that will determine how far this lineup travels beyond China.

In this author's view, the rotating seats and camping features are the more interesting signal than the headline range number. Range claims in extended-range EVs are inherently less verifiable under standard test cycles because the generator introduces variables that pure BET figures do not. But cabin features designed for stationary use tell you something about how Xiaomi expects people to use these vehicles: as destinations, not just transport.
