The death toll from the earthquake that struck Colombia on August 10, 2026, surpassed 250 as of August 11, as rescuers raced to find survivors in the rubble of collapsed buildings, primarily in the city of Cali (Reuters).

The earthquake, described by the New York Times as a 7.4-magnitude event, is the strongest quake to hit Colombia this century (New York Times; Reuters). Magnitude is a way of measuring how much energy an earthquake releases. A 7.4 is a major earthquake, strong enough to destroy buildings over a wide area. The quake shook Colombia's Pacific coast and was felt as far inland as the capital, Bogotá. The New York Times reported that at least 20 buildings collapsed with people trapped inside, and videos circulated showing partially collapsed structures in Cali (New York Times).

Cali bore the brunt of the human cost. At least 85 people died in the city, according to Mayor Alejandro Eder (CNN). The New York Times, in its earlier reporting, put the nationwide death toll at at least 111 before Reuters updated the figure to over 250 on August 11 (New York Times).

Rescue operations have continued around the clock. Colombian emergency crews pulled a survivor alive from a collapsed building in Cali on Tuesday, August 11, a day after the quake struck (Reuters). A 6-month-old girl and her mother were also rescued from beneath a five-story building in the city (Reuters). New York Times reporters Genevieve Glatsky, reporting from Cali, and Julie Turkewitz, reporting from Bogotá, documented the late-night search for survivors in the immediate aftermath (New York Times).

Colombia's seismic monitoring agency, the Servicio Geológico Colombiano (SGC), has registered a series of earthquakes in the region in the days surrounding the main event. On August 8, the SGC reported an earthquake in Valle del Cauca with an origin time of 13:59 local time (18:59 UTC) and an epicenter at 4.41°, -76° (SGC). The SGC's seismic intensity selector also lists an earthquake on August 7 at 12:49 PM with a magnitude of 4.8 and an intensity of VIII on the Modified Mercalli scale, along with two smaller events on August 6 (magnitudes 2.3 at depths of 140 km and 146 km, respectively) (SGC). The Modified Mercalli scale measures how much shaking people actually feel at the surface and how much damage it causes, and VIII means severe shaking that can badly damage ordinary buildings. An earlier SGC detail page records a minor 2.2-magnitude event near Cali on June 5, 2026, at a depth of 112 km (SGC).

Colombia's disaster management infrastructure is tested regularly. The Unidad Nacional para la Gestión del Riesgo de Desastres (UNGRD) runs the Simulacro Nacional de Respuesta a Emergencias, an annual national exercise designed to strengthen the country's disaster response capacity (UNGRD). The agency has previously reported on earthquake impacts in the region: a 4.6-magnitude quake with an epicenter in Calima, Valle, produced no affectations in its zone of influence, and a prior 6.9-magnitude event left 247 homes, a health center, 10 educational centers, and three additional facilities affected (UNGRD; UNGRD). An earlier UNGRD bulletin documented a 4.3-magnitude quake centered in Colombia, Huila, that was felt in the capital cities of Cali and Armenia (UNGRD).

The rapid escalation of the death toll from the initial 111 reported on August 10 to over 250 by August 11 reflects both the severity of structural collapses in densely populated areas and the operational tempo of search-and-rescue teams working through compromised buildings. The 7.4 magnitude places this event well above any seismic occurrence Colombia has experienced in the 21st century, and the concentration of fatalities in Cali points to the particular vulnerability of the city's building stock to deep or near-surface ground motion originating along the Pacific coastal tectonic margin.

The broader context here is Colombia's position along the boundary where the Nazca Plate subducts beneath the South American Plate, a tectonic boundary that has historically produced high-magnitude events affecting the country's western departments. Earth's crust is made up of large pieces called tectonic plates that slowly move and grind against each other. Subduction happens when one plate slides beneath another and sinks into the planet's interior. Colombia's western coast sits directly above the zone where the oceanic Nazca Plate dives under the continental South American Plate, like a conveyor belt carrying ocean floor deep into the earth. Valle del Cauca, home to Cali and roughly 4.5 million residents, sits in close proximity to this seismic source. The SGC's recent logging of a 4.8-magnitude foreshock on August 7 with Mercalli intensity VIII, two days before the main event, raises questions about whether Colombia's early-warning systems and UNGRD's preparedness protocols, including the annual Simulacro Nacional, can be activated fast enough to matter when the lead time between a precursor event and a catastrophic mainshock is measured in days rather than hours. A foreshock is a smaller earthquake that happens before a larger one in the same area. The rescue of the infant and her mother from a collapsed five-story building, and the recovery of a survivor more than 24 hours post-event, underscores that window-of-survivability operations remain the most critical variable in reducing the toll as the search continues.
