A Solar Eclipse Is Coming to Iceland — But the Weather May Not Cooperate

On 12 August 2026, a total solar eclipse will pass over Greenland, Iceland, and Spain. During a total solar eclipse, the Moon moves between the Earth and the Sun and blocks the Sun's light completely for a short time. This creates a brief period of daytime darkness. For this eclipse, that darkness will last up to 2 minutes and 18 seconds.
In Iceland, the eclipse will pass directly over the Blue Lagoon, a famous geothermal spa and one of the country's biggest tourist attractions. That has drawn a lot of attention from scientists and science communicators. But the weather is becoming a problem.
As of 11 August 2026, forecasters were predicting clouds and rain across most of Iceland before the eclipse. Sævar Helgi Bragason, known across Iceland as "Stjörnu Sævar" ("Star Sævar"), is the country's best-known astronomer. He serves as the International Astronomical Union's National Outreach Coordinator for Iceland and runs the websites eclipse2026.is and icelandatnight.is. Bragason has been a key organizer of Iceland's preparations for the event.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office (Vedurstofa Íslands) shares weather forecasts in English on its website, en.vedur.is. Its forecast for 12 August called for light rain or showers, mostly dry in the southwest in the afternoon, with temperatures of 8 to 18 degrees Celsius. A separate text forecast gave slightly different numbers: temperatures of 10 to 20 degrees Celsius, east winds of 10–15 meters per second, and rain or drizzle in the far south by evening. The shipping forecast, issued at 01:07, reported winds of 8–15 m/s by noon with fog and drizzle, calling conditions normal with no alerts. The area forecast for southeast Iceland showed light rain and 10 degrees Celsius at Hvalnes at 03:00 GMT.
The reason these forecasts differ is that Icelandic weather changes a lot from place to place. Think of it like a patchwork quilt of microclimates — one valley might be clear while the next one over is pouring rain. That matters for eclipse viewers because it could determine whether someone sees the Sun's corona — the faint, glowing ring around the Sun that only appears when the Sun is fully blocked — or just watches the clouds get darker.
For Bragason and others who have spent years preparing, clouds on eclipse day would be a major setback. The overlap of a rare celestial event with widespread cloud cover makes both scientific observation and public outreach difficult.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office is also working on projects beyond the eclipse. In October 2025, the office received a grant of 147 million Icelandic krónur (about $1 million USD) from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The money funds four projects on volcanic hazards and aviation safety, including new ways to measure volcanic dangers, automatic analysis of eruption plumes, coordination among European volcano observatories, and research on how sulphur dioxide gas affects aviation.
Iceland sits on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a crack in the Earth's surface where two tectonic plates are slowly pulling apart. That location makes the country especially prone to volcanic eruptions, which have disrupted European air travel before — most famously in 2010. The ICAO funding supports the meteorological office's role as both a national weather service and a key player in keeping European airspace safe from volcanic threats.
The bigger picture is that for eclipse visitors and organizers, where you stand in Iceland on 12 August may matter more than where the Moon's shadow falls. The forecasts from the meteorological office are the best guide, but with clouds and rain moving differently across the island, flexibility will be essential. The eclipse's path over the Blue Lagoon adds a tourism and economic angle to the weather story, but the main focus for Bragason and his colleagues remains the national effort to help people experience this rare event — clouds or no clouds.
