The Great Eclipse Glasses Hunt of 2026

On 12 August 2026, a solar eclipse — where the Moon passes in front of the Sun and blocks most of its light — sent millions of people across western Europe searching for special protective glasses. It was the first eclipse this dramatic in more than 25 years, covering up to 95% of the Sun as seen from the UK. But the glasses people needed to watch it safely were nearly impossible to find. Corner shops in London sold 6,000 pairs in hours, a WhatsApp group shared secret locations for fresh stock, and street prices hit £20 a pair (The Guardian; BBC).
In the weeks before the eclipse, certified eclipse glasses sold for about £5. These are not regular sunglasses — they are specially made to block out almost all light, including harmful rays your eyes cannot see. But by the morning of 12 August, the Royal Observatory Greenwich had sold out its entire stock of more than 15,000 pairs and said the volume of orders was "unprecedented" (The Guardian, 10 Aug; The Guardian, 12 Aug). Exmoor National Park ran out too; a spokesperson said they could not get more in time and would not need more until 2081. Robert Dyas listed glasses at £2.99 but showed them as out of stock. Amazon had a pack priced at £14.99, but the delivery date was 13 August — one day too late.
Not everyone agreed there was a true shortage. Neill Sanders, who runs the stargazing group Go Stargazing and coordinates Astronomers Without Borders in the UK, said he had imported 300,000 pairs from the United States and sold 100,000 at discount prices to astronomy clubs and community groups in the weeks before. On the day of the eclipse, all of that demand landed in a few hours. Ali Raza, who owns the AM2PM convenience store in Whitechapel, got a delivery from Spain at 2:30am. By 9:30am, his stock was gone. He sold 6,000 pairs and had to turn people away for the rest of the day. Customers came from Surrey, Southend-on-Sea, Southampton, and Birmingham. Queues formed outside corner shops across London in the early hours. A stall outside Whitechapel tube station charged £10 a pair. On Reddit, someone said they would be outside Camden Town station selling at £20 until they ran out. Many corner shops with last-minute stock doubled the usual price (The Guardian, 12 Aug).
A WhatsApp group popped up to share where new glasses were being delivered around London. But it also created tension. One corner shop owner posted to the group asking for calm, describing "very bad things" including customers threatening stores with bad reviews and driving long distances to chase stock (The Guardian, 12 Aug).
Even Sunglass Hut put up signs saying they did not sell eclipse glasses, after being flooded with questions. It showed how far the search had spread — people were walking into any shop that had anything to do with eyewear (The Guardian, 12 Aug).
The health risk is serious. Looking at the Sun during an eclipse without certified glasses can damage the retina — the thin layer of tissue at the back of the eye that senses light. Panayiotis Maghsoudlou, an eye doctor and lecturer at the University of Bristol, explained that injuries happen around eclipses because the sky darkens and the glare drops, making people feel comfortable staring at the Sun with their pupils wide open. After the 1999 total solar eclipse in the UK, the Royal College of Ophthalmologists reported about 70 cases of vision problems linked to watching the event (The Guardian, 12 Aug; The Guardian, 10 Aug).
Regular sunglasses do not protect you. Welding glasses work only if they are rated Shade 13 or Shade 14 (or DIN 12 to 14). If you had no certified glasses, Jake Foster, an astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, suggested an indirect method: project the Sun's image through small holes in a household item like a colander. The UK Health Security Agency and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists published guidance on safe viewing on their websites (The Guardian, 10 Aug; BBC Yorkshire).
The broader context here is a collision between something that happens rarely and a retail system designed to deliver goods efficiently day to day, not to handle a sudden spike all on one morning. The 2026 eclipse was the most dramatic partial solar eclipse visible from the UK in nearly 30 years. The last comparable event, the 1999 total eclipse, also led to eye injuries and a rush for protective equipment. What is different now is how information moves: a WhatsApp group can send thousands of buyers to one shop within minutes, creating a surge that normal shops simply cannot absorb. Sanders was right that glasses existed, but 300,000 pairs spread through astronomy clubs is not the same as 300,000 pairs sitting on shop shelves on the morning people needed them. The price jump from £5 to £20 was the direct result of that gap.
The next eclipse on this scale visible from the UK will not happen until 2081, as the Exmoor spokesperson noted. But the lessons from 12 August 2026 matter sooner than that. Health agencies and scientific bodies can put out guidance, but without a plan to get glasses where people need them ahead of time, the gap will keep being filled by WhatsApp groups, high prices, and long drives to a corner shop in Whitechapel.
