Virgin Galactic's Space Tourism Flights Are Delayed Again — Here's What's Going On

Virgin Galactic has pushed back the first paying-customer flight of its new spaceship to February 2027 at the earliest. Colglazier said the delay was not caused by one big problem. Instead, it came down to what he called "hundreds of relatively small but important installation tasks" in putting the spaceship together. Some parts arrived slightly off from their exact specifications, and fixing those tiny gaps took more time than expected. Think of it like building a car where a bracket is a fraction of a millimeter too wide, small to the eye but enough to throw off how pieces fit together. The avionics, the electronics and wiring that control the ship, also took longer than planned to install in the first new vehicle, called Delta 1, according to Aviation Week.
Ground tests on the first spaceship are set to begin later this month. These tests will show whether the whole vehicle works as intended when assembled. The company reported $286 million in cash as of June 30, 2026. That money has to cover finishing and testing the first Delta-class spaceship, plus building a second one, which is already under construction and targeted for commercial flights in the second quarter of 2027. Virgin Galactic plans to reach 10 flights per month by the end of Q2 2027, but that assumes both ships pass testing and are flying regularly by then.
Virgin Galactic stopped flying space tourists in 2024 after seven successful commercial flights with its previous spaceship, called VSS Unity. The company redirected its resources to building the new Delta-class ships. In May 2026, the company said VSS Unity had returned to flight to help test the new spaceship, so the older vehicle still has a role to play.
The company is not short on customers. Since opening a new round of ticket sales in March, Virgin Galactic has sold over 50 tickets at $750,000 each, bringing in more than $50 million in bookings. Those ticket holders are now looking at a wait that stretches into 2027 or beyond.
On the research side, the company has lined up science missions that depend on the Delta timeline. Virgin Galactic and the nonprofit Operation Period announced the first spaceflight to study menstruation in weightlessness, planned for a 2027 flight. Purdue University researchers and students plan to crew and oversee the Purdue 1 mission, also expected to launch in 2027.

The broader context here is the tension between the precision required to build spacecraft and the pressure to start earning money. Colglazier's description of the delay as hundreds of small tasks rather than one big failure makes sense for an industry where parts must fit together to within a thousandth of an inch. That level of care is normal in aerospace, but it is expensive when a company has stopped its only source of revenue and is spending down a limited pile of cash.
The target of 10 flights per month by the end of Q2 2027 is ambitious for a two-ship fleet where both vehicles are just entering service. Reaching it requires not only that both ships pass testing on time, but that the gap between flights shrinks to a pace Virgin Galactic has never actually achieved. The Delta class is designed to be reused more often and turned around faster than the previous spaceship, but that is still on paper until proven in real flights.
The previous timeline, outlined in Virgin Galactic's Q4 and full-year 2025 results on March 30, described commercial flights with the first new spaceship continuing through 2026 and into early 2027. The shift to February 2027 moves the goalpost by a quarter, and the company's cash position, while not immediately alarming, leaves less room for further delays.
