Meta's AI Assistant Comes to the Mac — Here's What It Does

Meta has launched a Mac app for its AI chatbot, the company announced on Wednesday, August 19, 2026. The app lets you share a window on your screen with Meta AI, which can then give you suggestions, answer questions, or create content based on what it sees. It also lets you talk to type across all your Mac apps. The Verge

The Mac launch comes as Meta shifts its chatbot from something you chat with toward a tool that helps you get work done. Several other AI companies already have desktop apps, so Meta is catching up rather than breaking new ground. Alongside the Mac app, Meta added new AI features for businesses and creators. The Verge

Those new features are significant. Meta AI can now connect directly to Instagram and Facebook accounts, Meta ad campaigns, and Google Workspace — the collection of tools that includes Google Docs, Gmail, and Google Sheets. The chatbot can look at how well your posts are doing in terms of reach, likes, shares, and saves, then suggest what to post next. It can also pull information from your business account and the web to create presentations, documents, and spreadsheets. It can even do these tasks on a repeating schedule, like sending you a weekly performance update. The Verge

The screen-sharing feature is the most interesting part. Instead of just being a chat window where you type questions, the Mac app can look at what is on your screen in a shared window and work with it. This is similar to how some other desktop AI tools already work, where the assistant uses what you are looking at as context instead of needing you to type everything out. The voice dictation feature means you can talk to the assistant from inside any Mac app, not just Meta's own.

Meta describes Meta AI as a free personal assistant that can answer questions, do research, shop, and complete tasks in its app and on the web. The mobile app is also required for managing Meta's AI glasses, including importing and sharing photos and videos. Meta AI The Mac app adds a third way to use the assistant, alongside the web and mobile versions.

The technology behind the chatbot has been updating quickly. Meta Superintelligence Labs introduced a model called Muse Spark in April 2026, followed by Muse Spark 1.1 in July, which Meta described as a big improvement. Meta AI Blog Meta AI Blog Meta also has a Muse Image model that follows instructions faithfully, edits images precisely, and can use Instagram for social context. A Muse Video model creates videos with sound. Meta AI Blog Another tool called SAM Audio can separate any sound from an audio or video file using text instructions. Meta AI Research

Meta's work on running AI directly on your device rather than in the cloud got attention in October 2025 with the release of ExecuTorch 1.0, described as Meta's complete solution for on-device AI. Meta AI Blog A separate desktop app called Manus, from an AI startup Meta acquired, started rolling out on August 13 for Mac and Windows. Manus features an AI agent — a program that can take actions on its own across your files and apps. PCMag With both the Manus app and the Meta AI Mac app, Meta now has two different desktop AI tools for different purposes.

In practice, the Mac app's screen sharing, Google Workspace connection, and ability to repeat tasks on a schedule make Meta AI more of a work tool than a chatbot. Creating presentations, documents, and spreadsheets from your business data and web sources, then doing it again automatically each week, is closer to having an automated assistant than a conversation. For creators, the ability to evaluate post performance and recommend future content places Meta AI directly into the Instagram and Facebook publishing process.

One thing worth noting is how much information Meta AI gathers. Screen sharing means the assistant can see whatever is on your screen. When you combine that with access to Google Workspace, Meta ad campaigns, Instagram and Facebook accounts, and web sources, the amount of data involved is large. Meta has not, in the materials available, explained how screen-share data is stored, kept, or used to train its AI models. That is something to watch for any business considering the app.

The competitive picture is simple. Other AI companies already have desktop apps. What sets Meta apart is not the chatbot itself but its direct connection to Meta's own advertising and social platforms, plus the Google Workspace link. A business that runs Meta ad campaigns and posts on Instagram can let Meta AI look at that data directly, without copying and pasting or exporting files. Whether that convenience outweighs the head start and wider reach of competing desktop AI tools is something the market will sort out over the coming months.

For now, Meta AI on the Mac is a capable, free option in a crowded field of desktop AI tools. Its biggest advantage is being close to the data that matters most to businesses and creators already using Meta's platforms.
