An 82-year-old German man pleaded guilty on August 18, 2026, to killing a 24-year-old American tourist named Amy Lopez. The crime had gone unsolved for nearly 32 years.

The man is identified only as Hans S, because German law keeps the names of criminal defendants private. He entered the courtroom in Koblenz, a city in western Germany, with a walking frame. His lawyer said his client admitted to the crime, and the judge asked him to confirm. He said yes. The courtroom was full, showing how well-known the case had become in the region.

Amy Lopez was from Texas. In September 1994, she was traveling through Europe and was last seen walking toward Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, a famous old fort above the Rhine River. Her body was found two hours later near the fortress.

Prosecutors say Hans S, who was 49 at the time, ran into Lopez by chance on the steep path to the fortress. They say he tricked her into going to a hidden area underneath the fort. There, they say, he handcuffed her, sexually assaulted her, and stabbed her nine times. Under German law, he is charged with murder driven by sexual urges, which carries a life sentence in prison.

The case was solved thanks to improvements in DNA technology. DNA is the genetic code found in every person's cells, and it can identify someone from tiny traces left behind.

About four years before the trial, better DNA testing found a trace on tiny pieces of skin on Lopez's trousers. But that evidence sat unused until last year, when Koblenz police set up a special team to look at old, unsolved cases. In the year before the arrest, the case had also been shown on a German TV program about unsolved crimes.

Hans S was arrested at a retirement home near Koblenz in February 2026. Police had collected saliva samples from volunteers, and one matched the DNA found on Lopez's clothing.

His lawyer told the German news agency DPA that the case had weighed on Hans S and that he gave a sample willingly because he wanted closure. Hans S had been convicted of a sexual offence in 1999, five years after Lopez's death. At that time, police did not have enough DNA evidence to connect him to the 1994 killing.

A psychiatric evaluation ordered by prosecutors found that Hans S was mentally responsible for his actions at the time of the crime. A final psychiatric report will come at the end of the trial. German courts see these evaluations as very important for sentencing, especially when the defendant is elderly and so much time has passed.

The bigger picture is that this case shows how slow improvements in science can bring old cases back to life. The evidence on Lopez's clothing gave no results in 1994. It took years of better and better DNA testing to find and identify the tiny skin fragments on her trousers. Then it took a fresh push by police to collect DNA samples from volunteers and find a match.

A verdict is expected early next month. In Germany, a murder conviction means a life sentence in prison. For a man who will turn 83 this year, whether he actually goes to prison will depend on what the court decides about his responsibility, his mental health, and whether prison is realistic at his age.
