Google Is Handing College Students a Free Year of Premium AI

Google is offering eligible college students in the United States a full year of its AI Pro subscription for free. The plan usually costs $200 per year or $20 per month. Students can sign up at one.google.com/ai-student, but the offer auto-renews at the full price after the first year unless they cancel Engadget.

The subscription includes Google's top-tier AI tools along with cloud storage. Subscribers get four times the normal usage limits in Gemini, Google's AI assistant, plus access to the Spark agentic platform — a system that lets AI carry out multi-step tasks on your behalf instead of just answering single questions. The deal also builds Gemini directly into apps like Gmail and Docs, adds 5TB of cloud storage, and includes a Google Health Premium subscription Engadget.

One detail worth knowing: you need a personal Gmail account to sign up. That keeps this offer separate from the Google Workspace accounts that schools manage, which have their own Gemini access terms Google Support.

College students outside the US get a different deal: a free year of Google AI Plus instead of the Pro tier. The Plus plan normally costs $5 per month and includes access to Gemini Omni, double the normal chatbot usage, and 400GB of storage Engadget.

Google is also selling a separate bundle that pairs AI Pro with YouTube Premium for $9 per month. That one is aimed at general consumers, not specifically students Engadget.

Google has run similar student offers before. In April 2025, it gave students the Google One AI Premium plan free for 15 months, which included Gemini Advanced and NotebookLM Plus Google Blog. In August 2025, CEO Sundar Pichai announced an expansion letting students sign up for a year of free AI Pro BestColleges. Google then extended the offer to students 18 and older in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa Google Blog, and in India the sign-up window closed on September 15, 2025 Google Blog India. The newest US offer replaces those earlier promotions as the current active program for American students.

Google's previous student offer for Gemini ended on March 11, 2026, and is no longer available Google. This new promotion fills that gap. Meanwhile, Google Workspace for Education editions still include the Gemini app and Gemini Notebook at no extra cost for schools Google Workspace, and the standalone AI Pro for Education add-on costs institutions $20 per user per month Google Workspace.

The tools students get go well beyond simple text generation. Google's AI Pro and AI Ultra plans include Gemini 3.1 Pro, video generation with Veo 3.1, and Deep Research Google Gemini. Google has also introduced Gemini 3.7 Flash, which it calls its "most intelligent workhorse model yet for coding and agents" Google Blog. The student deal uses the Pro tier rather than Ultra, but it still gives students access to serious AI tools at no cost.

The broader context here is a sustained effort by Google to put its most advanced AI tools into the hands of college students right when they are forming the software habits they will carry into their careers. Including the Spark agentic platform specifically signals that Google wants students comfortable with AI that works autonomously, not just as a chatbot. And the auto-renew at full price after the free year means the offer is effectively a customer acquisition strategy: Google is betting that students will find the tools valuable enough to pay for once the trial ends.

For students, the deal is simple: a year of advanced AI tools, expanded usage, and integration into everyday apps at zero cost. The catch is remembering to cancel before the auto-renew kicks in, and accepting that Google will collect usage data within its ecosystem. For Google, the logic is just as clear: get the next generation of workers comfortable with Google's AI tools rather than a rival's, while the market for AI subscriptions is still taking shape.
