Novonesis Had a Great First Half — Here's What Changed

Novonesis, a company that makes biological solutions like enzymes used in everything from laundry detergent to agriculture, grew its sales by 8% in the first half of 2026 compared to a year earlier. That growth figure strips out things like currency swings and acquisitions, so it reflects the business itself getting bigger. The company also made a healthy profit margin of 37.7% — meaning for every 100 dollars of sales, it kept about 37 dollars and 70 cents as operating profit before certain costs like interest and taxes. Novonesis raised its sales growth forecast for the full year from 5–7% up to 7–8% (Novonesis). Management also said the full-year profit margin should land at the higher end of its 37–38% range.
These results came out August 19, 2026, and they beat what the company expected back in February. At that point, Novonesis had forecast 5–7% sales growth and a 37–38% margin, while warning that currency exchange rates would work against it (Reuters). The new forecast lifted the growth range by two percentage points at both ends.
The strong first half follows a solid but bumpier 2025. For the full year, Novonesis grew sales 7% with a 37.1% profit margin (Novonesis). However, Reuters reported that fourth-quarter sales had missed Wall Street expectations because growth stalled in the company's agriculture, energy and technology unit (Reuters). The first-half 2026 rebound suggests that stumble did not derail the bigger picture.
Looking at the path through 2025 helps put the current numbers in perspective. In the first half of 2025, growth was 9% and the company narrowed its full-year forecast to 6–8% (Novonesis). By the first nine months, growth had cooled to 8% and management nudged the forecast up to 7–8% (Novonesis). The year ended at 7%. So the 8% growth in early 2026 means the business is speeding up again after slowing in late 2025.
The profit margin tells an important part of the story. The 37.7% margin from the first half of 2026 is 0.6 percentage points higher than the 37.1% for all of 2025. It also sits at the very top of the range the company had guided for. Management expects the full-year margin to land at the high end of that 37–38% range, which signals confidence that profits will hold up in the second half even with currency headwinds.
In August 2025, Novonesis set long-term targets through 2030. The plan calls for faster sales growth, wider profit margins, and better returns on the money invested in the company. Growth is expected to come mainly from selling more products rather than raising prices, helped by cost savings from the merger that created Novonesis (Chr. Hansen combined with Novozymes), plus modest price increases of 1–2% per year (Novonesis). The first-half 2026 numbers fit that plan, though six months does not prove a multi-year strategy is working.
On June 23, 2026, Novonesis held a conference call explaining its Household Care business — covering the industry, where the company fits, and what drives growth. It was not a financial update, but it came about two months before the H1 results and gave investors a way to understand the company's different business lines.
The key question for investors is whether this growth spurt will last or just looks good because the comparison period was weak. The Reuters report about the agriculture, energy and technology unit struggling in late 2025 raises the question of whether that division has recovered or whether other parts of the business are now driving growth. By raising the full-year forecast, management is saying it expects the second half to be just as strong as the first — not a one-time bump. The profit margin may be the more telling number. A 37.7% margin with a full-year target at the high end of 37–38% suggests the company is getting more efficient as it grows — its costs are not rising as fast as its sales, even with currency working against it. For a company betting on selling more rather than charging more, that is exactly what the strategy calls for. Whether it holds up in the second half is what the next round of numbers will tell us.
