Mitch McConnell Goes to Hospital: What's Happening

U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell was taken to a hospital on Sunday morning. His office confirmed this through a statement to Reuters on June 14, 2026. Doctors have not said what is wrong with him or which hospital he is at.

McConnell is 84 years old. He has had health problems the past few years that people have talked about openly. In March 2023, he fell at a hotel in Washington and broke ribs and his head. Later that year, he froze up while speaking in public—he would stop talking for several seconds in the middle of sentences. A doctor checked him after that happened. In February 2024, he gave up his job as the leader of Republicans in the Senate, but he kept his position as a senator from Kentucky.

Why does this matter? McConnell was the Republican leader for 17 years—longer than anyone else has ever held that job. Even though he is not the leader anymore, people pay close attention to his health because he is still a powerful voice in the Republican Party and influences what happens in the Senate.

Right now, we know McConnell is in the hospital. His office told us this officially, which means it is real news, not rumors. We do not yet know how sick he is, when he might come home, or how long he will stay.
