Rockstar Games showed new footage of Grand Theft Auto VI on Netflix on August 27, 2026, at 3 p.m. ET. The same video appeared on Rockstar's YouTube channel and the GTA VI website later that evening at 9 p.m. ET. The Verge

The footage introduces the game's two main characters by name: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Short clips show players picking weapons from a menu, driving a boat, playing basketball, diving underwater, racing on a track, and parachuting. The video is brief and jumps quickly between scenes, giving quick peeks rather than long stretches of play.

Netflix as the first place to show a Rockstar trailer is an unusual choice. Netflix has been adding video games to its service over the past few years, but GTA VI is a game for consoles and PCs, not for Netflix itself. Putting the trailer on Netflix first, instead of just YouTube, places one of the most anticipated entertainment releases on a platform most people know for watching TV shows and movies.

Rockstar announced the Netflix premiere on August 6 through its news site. Rockstar Games The company then confirmed the August 27 date in a post on X (Twitter) on Thursday morning. Mashable

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on May 26, 2026. Rockstar Games The game will not be sold on a physical disc. The Verge

The digital-only decision deserves a closer look. Grand Theft Auto is a series that has sold tens of millions of physical copies over the years. Now it will be download-only, meaning you buy it online and install it directly to your device. For the company that makes the game, the financial logic is simple: no discs to manufacture, no shelves to stock, and no used-game market where players resell copies to each other. For buyers, it means the game has no resale value, and you depend entirely on the online store of whatever platform you use to access it. It also shuts out anyone whose internet connection is too slow or limited for a large download, though fewer people face that problem each year.

The road to this footage has not been entirely smooth for Rockstar. Videos that appeared to be leaked GTA VI footage showed up online earlier, linked to a person or group calling themselves "CyberLeek." Rockstar called the leaks "heartbreaking." The Verge The company has dealt with leaks before, including a 2022 incident where unfinished footage spread widely online. Neither incident seems to have changed Rockstar's marketing plans, though the word "heartbreaking" suggests the leaks cost the company something beyond simply having secrets revealed early.

What the footage does not answer is how deep the game really is. The clips show activities like boating, basketball, diving, racing, and parachuting, but they are quick snapshots. They confirm these features exist but do not show how they connect to each other, how the two-character setup works in practice, or how detailed the game's world feels when you are playing. That is normal for trailers at this stage, but it means there is still a big gap between what we have seen and the May 2026 release.

The Netflix partnership, the digital-only confirmation, and the two named characters are the real news. Everything else is a tease.
