Insta360's New Luna Ultra Camera: What You Need to Know

Insta360 released a new professional camera called the Luna Ultra on June 10. It has two lenses that work together and captures video in 8K resolution — the highest clarity available right now. The camera was designed in partnership with Leica, a famous German optics company known for high-quality lenses.

Why two lenses instead of one. The dual-lens setup lets you record two different angles at the same time without carrying two separate cameras. Think of it like having two video cameras in one device. After you shoot, you can choose which angle or framing to use while editing — you're not locked into your choice the moment you press record.

One notable feature is called Live Frame Photos. Instead of picking a single frame when you press the button, the camera records a short video clip around that moment. Later, you can pick exactly which frame you want to keep. It's the same idea as the "Live Photo" feature on iPhones, but done here at much higher quality within a dedicated video camera.

Leica's role is important to understand. Leica is a premium brand in photography, and when their name appears on a camera, it signals they helped design or tune the optics. However, companies can partner in different ways — from fully developing the lens together to simply calibrating the colors to Leica's standards. Insta360 hasn't said exactly how deep Leica's involvement goes. Real-world testing by professionals will show whether the Leica partnership made a meaningful difference to image quality or was more of a branding arrangement.

This camera is aimed at professionals who shoot video — filmmakers, broadcasters, and production companies — rather than casual users. The announcement happened at NAB Show 2026, a major industry event in May where broadcast and production people gather. Insta360 made it available to buy just three weeks later, in June.

You can buy the Luna Ultra through the Insta360 Store, Amazon, Best Buy, and other retailers. A separate small light accessory is being sold separately and will ship later. For full details and current pricing, check the company's launch page.

The camera comes at a time when video equipment is mixing traditional hardware — the physical camera body and lenses — with smart software that does things automatically. Insta360 has built a reputation for AI-powered features: automatic reframing, stabilization to keep footage smooth, and tools that level the horizon without you thinking about it. The Luna Ultra follows that pattern.
