9 New Startups Investors Are Watching, in Plain English

TechCrunch has shared its list of the nine buzziest startups from Y Combinator's latest Demo Day. The picks came from companies named by at least two early investors. The list was published on September 13, 2026. TechCrunch
The timing points to Summer 2026. Y Combinator lists its Summer 2026 Demo Day as Thursday, September 10, after Spring 2026 on Tuesday, June 16 and Winter 2026 on Tuesday, March 24. Y Combinator
Demo Day is when young companies funded by YC show their work to chosen investors and press. Y Combinator It is invite-only for about 1,500 investors and media. It meets in person at YC's campus in San Francisco. Y Combinator
The startups named so far
Automarine was among the nine. It is building data centers that float at sea, first powered by gas and later by nuclear power. Think of it as a power plant and computer building placed together on a ship.
Its plan is a gas-powered pilot by 2028, then floating nuclear power ships in 2032. It claims over $4 billion in customer interest through letters of intent, which are non-binding notes saying customers may buy.
Dipole Labs also made the cut. It builds fast networking gear that uses light to move information between computers in AI data centers.
Isengard Industries was named as well. It builds jet-powered drones that can attack or stop other drones, made near where they are used. TechCrunch reported the company already has $10 million in revenue, meaning actual sales.
Lamb Labs completes the group detailed so far. It builds special computer chips that run AI answers, with the AI's learned settings baked directly into the chip.
How large the batch is
This list is a snapshot, not a census. YC's directory lists 234 companies in the Summer 2026 batch, 193 in Spring 2026, 199 in Winter 2026 and 51 so far in Fall 2026.
The directory holds 6,216 companies in total. YC says it has backed over 5,000 companies since 2005, with a combined value over $1T. Y Combinator
There is precedent for this kind of investor poll. TechCrunch published The 11 standout startups from YC's Demo Day, according to VCs on June 18, 2026. TechCrunch That list held 11 startups and included 9 Mothers, an AI-powered counter-drone systems startup, and Arga Labs.
The pace is quick. YC has said its Fall 2026 batch starts October 22 in San Francisco, with the F26 Demo Day listed for Wednesday, December 2.
In my view, the pattern for non-experts is less about one company and more about shared problems. Power supply, moving data inside AI clusters, the cost of each AI answer, and cheap drone frames all point to places where building is hard right now. The difference worth keeping is between sales, letters of intent, and future dates. Isengard's $10 million in revenue is a different kind of proof than Automarine's $4 billion in letters of intent and its 2028 and 2032 dates. Both matter. They do not matter in the same way.
The broader context here is continuity. YC noted that more than 20 YC startups recently published research at top conferences including NeurIPS and ICLR. Research does not predict sales. It does show the pipeline still mixes hands-on engineering with AI model work. For teams adding computer capacity, networking, or chips, the practical question is fit. Floating power, new light-based connections, and baked-in chips each solve one problem while creating another. They are worth tracking because they open new options even if early tries fail first.
