Why There's No New Steam Deck Yet

Valve has launched its 2026 hardware lineup: the Steam Controller, Steam Machine, and Steam Frame. Designer Pierre-Loup Griffais said Valve is still figuring out "how and when" to make the next Steam Deck handheld, according to the most recent account The Verge.
Valve says a Steam Deck 2 will happen, but only when it finds the right chip. Griffais said Valve does not want a sequel that is only a little faster if it drains the battery much faster. It wants a big jump in speed without a big loss in battery life. That chip does not exist yet. It is like wanting a phone that runs much faster but still lasts all day.
That message has not changed. In September 2023, Griffais told The Verge not to expect a faster Steam Deck in the next couple of years, suggesting 2025 or 2026 as possible timing The Verge. In November 2025, Griffais opened a Verge interview by saying "Steam Deck is not what we're here to talk about today." The Verge interviewed Griffais and Yazan Aldehayyat about why there is no news about Steam Deck 2.
Earlier this year, Griffais told IGN that Valve was "hard at work" on the next handheld. No release date was given. He repeated the "how and when" wording in the latest interviews around the 2026 launch.
The 2026 launch faces supply problems. Valve delayed and repriced the Steam Machine and Steam Frame due to a memory shortage. Valve priced the Steam Frame headset at $1,059. Valve also states that Steam Deck OLED may be out of stock at times in some regions due to memory and storage shortages.
When IGN asked if the shortage changed Valve's thinking about starting work on Steam Deck 2, Griffais answered "Not really."
The current details are public. Valve says Steam Deck uses Zen 2 and RDNA 2, the processor and graphics parts that do the main work. Valve lists an OLED screen, better battery life, and faster WiFi. Valve states that its Steam Hardware family officially expands in 2026. Valve states that the Steam Controller has magnetic thumbsticks using TMR technology, which tracks movement with magnets to avoid wear. Valve states that Steam Frame includes next-generation magnetic thumbsticks for precision and capacitive finger sensing, which senses touch. The Steam Frame is Valve's newest VR headset. Valve software developers Pierre-Loup Griffais and Jeff Leinbaugh discussed the Steam Frame launch with Tom's Hardware Tom's Hardware. Griffais is one of the architects behind SteamOS and the Steam Deck.
The broader context here is simple. A handheld must balance speed and battery life. In my view, Valve is holding that balance steady and waiting for a chip that improves both at once, instead of a small upgrade that splits the target game makers build for.
Worth flagging is what waiting allows. One steady Deck target plus living-room and VR devices lets SteamOS spread without breaking older games. My kids grew up as games moved from family computer to console to phone. Systems that lasted kept old games working while hardware caught up. In my view, Valve is making that same bet.
