Prime Minister Andy Burnham's father, Roy Burnham, died on Monday. The news was made public on 16 September. Mr Burnham cancelled events earlier in the week, the BBC said BBC.

Roy Burnham used to work as a telephone engineer. He and his wife Eileen raised their son in Culcheth, in Cheshire. Mr Burnham has often spoken about that family background.

Mr Burnham said his father had advanced Alzheimer's, an illness that harms memory. His father did not know his son had become prime minister. The BBC reported that detail.

Leaders of all the opposition parties sent condolences. Mr Burnham thanked well-wishers and the other party leaders for their kind messages. This is the normal courtesy when a serving prime minister loses a family member.

In July, Mr Burnham said his father's illness had shaped his drive to reform adult social care in England. That means support for older and disabled people with daily life, such as washing and eating. He made that link himself. Care is devolved, so his plan is for England only.

The broader context here is simple. A prime minister gets very little fully private time. The daily diary is fixed and government business goes on. Even a short break needs clear decisions on who steps in and what happens in Parliament.

Looking at what this means for the next few weeks, two points are worth keeping in mind. First, sympathy across parties pauses normal political argument. It has no policy meaning. Second, Mr Burnham's family story may shape how he talks about care reform in England. It does not change the timetable for new laws or the questions over money.

For now, Downing Street said the priority is private. The prime minister is with family. News on the funeral and a return to duties will follow through the normal channels.
