Apple's New AirPods 5: How Much They Cost and Which Ones to Pick

Apple's AirPods 5 start at $129, and both versions block background noise and translate speech live Engadget. The basic pair costs $129. The pair with the Wireless Charging Case costs $149.
The $20 gap is mostly about the case. The $149 case charges without a cable on Qi pads or an Apple Watch charger. It also plays a Find My sound to help find it, lets you swipe on the buds for volume, and gives longer battery life in the buds and the case.
For sound, Apple points to new vents inside the buds, updated noise-blocking software, and Adaptive EQ, which tunes the sound for your ears automatically. Apple says they block 50% more noise than AirPods 4 and calls them best-in-class open-ear Active Noise Cancellation Apple. Open-ear means no soft tip plugs the ear. Like a window left cracked open, outside sound leaks in, so the buds rely on microphone placement and fast software fixes instead of a tight seal.
They are also tougher. They are rated IP57, up from IP54 on AirPods 4. That means they can sit under up to 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. Apple announced them in a September 2026 newsroom release and grouped them with iPhone 18 Pro and the new Apple Watch lineup in a September 11, 2026 post for fall shoppers Apple.
The broader context here is simple. Noise blocking is now included, so you do not pay extra just to quiet an office or a plane. The $20 pays for easier charging and battery life, not clearer hearing.
In my view, that split makes sense. Apple treats quiet listening as normal, while longer battery, cable-free power, on-bud volume, and a findable case cost a little more.
Worth flagging for daily life, translation and noise blocking both do heavy computer work with the ears left open. Translation must mix incoming speech, nearby sounds, and spoken output without cutting you off, while noise blocking must cut low hum without pressure or muffled voices. The new vents, updated software, and water resistance suit travel, walking meetings, and workouts.
What this enables, if they work as promised, is lighter packing. One open pair could cover calls, train rides, exercise, and talks in other languages without swapping buds or wearing a tight plug all day.
