Apple may be close to launching a home hub built around Siri AI. The device, known inside Apple as J490, is now in wide testing in Apple employees' homes, according to reporting attributed to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Engadget

The hardware is a smart display to compete with Amazon's Echo Show and Google's Nest Hub. It will either sit on a stand that looks like a HomePod mini cut in half or attach to a wall. Reports describe a 7-inch square touch screen. 9to5Mac

That screen is said to have a camera, microphones and Wi-Fi. The on-screen system is described as a mix of iPhone, Apple TV and Apple Watch software. Setup and some tasks will sync with an iPhone. It is said to use facial recognition to tell who is looking at the screen and then show that person's apps, notes, calendar appointments, news, music and podcasts.

On software, the hub runs an entirely new system based on tvOS, the Apple TV software, and centered on Siri AI. 9to5Mac Apple has said Siri AI requires a home hub such as HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini, or Apple TV 4K with the latest operating system software. Apple Its new HomePod documentation describes HomePod as connecting to and controlling Matter-enabled accessories, devices that use the shared smart-home standard, and serving as an essential home hub for remote access. The schedule has slipped before. J490 was first planned for spring 2025 but was delayed to finish work on a new Siri. Bloomberg Current reporting points to release around iOS 27, the next iPhone software, this fall. 9to5Mac One July report said as soon as October. MacRumors Apple Stores are separately preparing significant changes for new Home product launches, and updated Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini models are expected to support Siri AI. 9to5Mac The hub has circulated under the informal names HomePad and HomePod Touch, while HomePod mini 2 is described as getting a new chip, audio improvements and Siri AI.

Work on Siri is still changing. Apple is planning two new versions of Siri for iOS 26.4 and iOS 27. Bloomberg In March 2025, the executive overseeing Siri told staff that delays to key features were "ugly and embarrassing." Apple is also developing an AI server chip with Broadcom. Siri AI is expected to work with more than 300,000 apps at launch and do tasks across Apple and third-party applications. Reuters Apple published a Newsroom update on Sept. 14, 2026 titled "Siri AI, a profoundly more capable and personal assistant, is here." Its Newsroom list as of Sept. 21, 2026 has no announcement about a Siri home hub smart display.

The broader context here is one I have watched before with PCs, phones and cloud services. Apple is late to a category it helped define with HomePod voice control and HomeKit, and it is trying to return through the assistant rather than the speaker. In my view, that order makes sense. A home screen like this stands or falls on understanding what you ask, finishing tasks across apps, telling family members apart, and easy setup with the iPhone in your pocket. The parts matter less than whether Siri can do those steps without help, like a kitchen noticeboard that listens.

Worth flagging for people who build apps and manage systems is the Apple TV base and the Matter path. Using Apple TV software gives Apple a familiar base for video, setup and accessories. Matter keeps the hub working with many brands instead of Apple-only devices. If Siri AI in iOS 27 handles tasks across apps at the scale described, the hub becomes a shared home screen for calendar, messages, media and home control. If it does not, no nice design will fix it. The employee home testing suggests Apple knows this. Over time, quiet background tools like this often spread once they are easy enough to ignore.
