Discord has started putting users into Teen or Adult groups automatically, without asking everyone to show ID first. The rollout starts this week, according to reporting published Sept. 22. Engadget

Discord makes its best guess from basic account details. It looks at how long the account has existed, what servers were joined and how active the account is. It does not read private messages or listen to calls. It is like a bouncer who only asks for ID when unsure, instead of carding everyone in line. Other users cannot see your group. You can check it under Account Status in User Settings. Discord expects 90 percent of users will need to do nothing else if the group is right.

This replaces an older plan. That plan would have asked more people for a face scan to estimate age or a photo of an ID if internal tools had not confirmed them as adults. Discord said in February it would pause those changes after users raised worries about privacy and collection of personal data.

The February reply was led in part by the chief technology officer, who spoke to community worries in a company blog post. The post is listed under Policy & Safety as "Getting Global Age Assurance Right: What We Got Wrong and What's Changing". In it, Discord said it will not collect IDs from everyone for age checks and promised clearer information about the outside companies it uses. Discord

The timing also changed. Discord pushed the worldwide rollout to the second half of 2026 to offer more ways to verify age. Discord An August 2025 policy update had described an age check designed to use less personal data, used only in certain cases to meet OSA rules. Discord

If Discord cannot decide, the account goes into an Unconfirmed group. Those users can show they are over 18 with a credit card, Apple App Store, Google Play Store, Google Wallet, AgeKey credential service, ID scan, or video selfie, depending on local rules. UK users can use a Passport ID already checked and saved in Google Wallet. Discord Support

Rules on data are strict. Any information sent for an age check is kept only as long as needed and in most cases is deleted right away. Discord will make any outside company that helps with checks delete user information for good once the check is done. Any face-based age estimate must happen fully on your own phone or computer.

Teen accounts get stricter safety settings to start. Messages from strangers go to a separate message requests inbox. Teens get a warning before accepting a friend request from someone with no mutual friends or no small shared server. They cannot see images marked sensitive or servers, channels and bot commands meant only for adults. Full profile details and activity can be seen only by friends and members of smaller servers.

Unconfirmed accounts get the first two teen protections until age is confirmed. That means stranger messages go to message requests and friend-request warnings stay on by default.

The broader context here is a move away from checking documents for everyone to checking only when needed. Most people are sorted quietly using basic account details, and only unclear cases are asked to use a payment method, an app store check, a reusable pass like AgeKey or Google Wallet, or a face scan. The key design choices are no reading of messages, no public age label, face checks kept on the device, and a contract rule that vendors must delete data. In my view, that setup should last better than the earlier plan to scan everyone. It collects less data while still allowing tougher checks where safety rules or the law call for them.
