Italy warned of dangerous heat in 18 cities in July 2025. Every summer since 2022 has had at least one major heat event somewhere in Europe. This 2026 wave is different because it's covering a larger area and lasting longer, not just hitting one temperature peak.
Here's why that matters: when the power cut parts of Brittany, it showed a real weakness. Northern Europe has not invested in cooling systems the way southern regions have — less air conditioning, fewer parks and green spaces, older buildings that trap heat instead of releasing it.
