On June 25, 2026, Britain recorded its hottest June temperature on record: 36.4°C at a weather station in Somerset. Just one day earlier, the previous June record had been broken. Back-to-back records within 48 hours is unusual for the UK, according to The Guardian and the BBC.

The extreme heat spread far beyond Britain. France recorded more than 5,700 deaths linked to heat during summer 2026. About one-third of those deaths occurred during specific heat wave periods, according to the French Ministry of Health. On June 24, the French health authorities declared the situation "exceptional" — the official term they use only when a dangerous heat event is expected to cause excess deaths. Swiss authorities documented record temperatures across the western part of the country on June 22. A major heat wave lasted from June 15 to June 21. Before that, May itself had been unusually warm: the average temperature was 1.5°C higher than normal, making it the eighth warmest May since records began. June continued that trend. This two-month stretch of sustained heat has no recent equivalent in Switzerland's temperature history.

When Heat Breaks the System

The immediate impact shows up in water supplies. South East Water announced on June 25 that it would ban non-essential outdoor water use in Kent starting July 3. The reason: demand was extremely high and water reserves had dropped to a critical level. When water companies declare a "Red alert," it means they are at their most serious supply warning before emergency measures kick in.

Kent faces this crisis partly because of how its water system works. The region relies heavily on underground water stored in chalk rock beneath the surface — this underground water recharges slowly, especially during dry winters and hot summers. During June's heat, two things happened at once: water on the surface evaporated faster, and people used more water to water gardens. Meanwhile, little rain was falling to refill the underground reserves. The water company gave eight days' notice before the ban took effect, following standard practice for these restrictions.

What This Heat Event Reveals

Three countries simultaneously experiencing extreme heat is not typical. The UK broke its record twice in two days. France is facing one of its worst heat-mortality events in recent memory — this is serious considering that France completely overhauled its heat response system after the summer of 2003, when a heat wave killed an estimated 15,000 people. Switzerland has now experienced unusual heat for two full months in a row.

When the UK, northern France, and Switzerland all heat up at the same time, it usually means a single large, stationary high-pressure system is sitting over the region. This kind of system blocks the normal weather patterns that usually cool northern Europe. Scientists studying climate change have noticed heat domes moving northward in recent years, and this event fits that pattern.

The immediate actions — emergency health measures in France, water rationing in Kent, public warnings in all three countries — are well-established responses. What is less clear is whether Europe's public health systems and water infrastructure were built with this kind of sustained, coordinated heat in mind.
