BMW's Electric 3 Series Costs Less Than the Gas Version

BMW has priced the electric 2027 BMW i3 50 xDrive at $61,500 before delivery fees. That is $4,400 less than the gas-powered BMW M350 xDrive at $65,900.

The context behind that price is that they are basically the same car. Both are versions of the 2027 BMW 3 Series, one electric and one gas. In the past, electrics cost more because they needed a totally separate design TechCrunch.

The cheaper gas models start at $49,900 for the 2027 BMW 330 and $51,900 for the 330 xDrive, which adds all-wheel drive. In Canada, prices start at $61,500 for the 330 xDrive, $78,500 for the M350 xDrive, and $74,900 for the i3 50 xDrive BMW Group.

BMW says the electric i3 can add 208 miles of driving in 10 minutes at a fast charger and go 468 miles on a full charge. The company says it drives with no exhaust pollution. It is the second car built on Neue Klasse, BMW's new electric car base, with 469 horsepower and strong pulling power rated at 645 Nm BMW Group.

Gas versions are staying. They will use 48V mild hybrid help, meaning a small electric helper that lets the gas engine use less fuel. BMW will start with two electric models, then add more models with fuel-saving gas engines BMW Group.

Viewed in practical terms, starting both types at once keeps things simple. BMW can use the same body shape, same interior, and same factory line for both. Think of it like the same house with two different furnaces. The differences are hidden underneath, in the battery base and engine, not the outside shape.

The broader context here is price. For years, carmakers said an electric version had to cost more. BMW is now trying the opposite idea in its best-selling sedan. If it can sell the electric performance model for less, then the bigger questions become chargers, parts supply, and driver habits, not the sticker price.

In my view, the charging speed matters more than the 468-mile number. Adding 208 miles in 10 minutes points to steady fast charging and good cooling. The 48V gas helper points to how much more BMW thinks it can still get from gas engines. Both are being improved at the same time.

Worth keeping in mind for families and fleet owners who buy many cars is how familiar everything stays. Same parts, same repairs, same controls for drivers. You only choose gas or electric. That puts the focus on charging, software updates, and total running costs.
