Valley Forge National Historical Park will hold special events on July 3–4, 2026, to celebrate 250 years since the Declaration of Independence, according to the National Park Service.

July 4, 2026 marks a quarter-century — that's 250 years — since America declared independence. The federal government, through America250, is coordinating celebrations across the country. Valley Forge was chosen because of its place in American history. During the Revolutionary War, George Washington's army camped there from 1777–78. The soldiers suffered greatly, but the camp also became the turning point where the army regrouped and grew stronger.

George Washington's Mount Vernon estate in Virginia will also host a celebration that same weekend. The estate's announced program, announced in January 2026, includes "An American Celebration" on July 4 with music and historical talks. Mount Vernon welcomes about a million visitors each year.

There is more to come. December 26, 2026 will mark 250 years since Washington crossed the Delaware River on Christmas night 1776. That risky crossing helped save the American Revolution. Washington Crossing Historic Park in Pennsylvania is planning its own event for that day.

The government is spreading these celebrations across several historic sites in Pennsylvania and Virginia instead of holding one big national event. This follows how the country celebrated its 200th birthday in 1976, though this year's plan is more coordinated through a federal commission.

The July 3–4 events at Valley Forge are the first major celebration. As of late June 2026, the Park Service had not yet released full details about expected crowds or how reporters will cover the events.
