The UK's Met Office is warning of a week-long heatwave coming to southern England and Wales, with temperatures expected to peak at 34°C in the south-east around 9 or 10 July 2026. This follows close on the heels of last month, when Britain recorded its highest June temperature ever: 37.7°C in Norfolk.

The heat will build gradually. Southern England will hit 28°C on 4 July, then 29°C across the south-east the next day, before climbing into the low 30s throughout the following week. According to the Guardian's report on the Met Office forecast, meteorologist Becky Mitchell confirmed the event will affect southern England and Wales.

The UK Health Security Agency — the government body that oversees public health threats — has issued yellow heat health alerts for six English regions: London, the south-east, south-west, east, East Midlands, and West Midlands. These alerts run across the period via the UKHSA dashboard, with London's alert starting early on 4 July and others running from midday on 4 July until the evening of 11 July. Wales has no alert in place as of now.

A yellow alert is the lower tier of the alert system. It signals that the heat will strain health and care services slightly. Some elderly people and those with heart or lung conditions may face higher health risks during this time.

The Drowning Risk and Water Precautions

The health agencies have flagged another danger that often gets overlooked: drowning. Hot weather draws people to lakes, rivers, and the sea. When someone plunges into cold water suddenly, their body gasps involuntarily and breathing becomes fast and shallow — a reaction called cold water shock. This response can lead to drowning even among strong swimmers. The UKHSA's warning on this point echoes guidance it published earlier in June.

Southern Water, the utility company serving Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, is introducing a hosepipe ban starting 00:01 on 10 July, to coincide with the peak temperatures. A hosepipe ban restricts non-essential water use: no garden watering, no car washing, no filling paddling pools. The company is taking this step before the peak arrives rather than waiting to react once the strain hits the system — a change in approach since the serious 2022 drought forced the industry to rethink its planning.

There is also a marine heatwave building along UK coasts. Warm ocean water can lower oxygen levels underwater, stress fish populations, and trigger harmful algal blooms. For a country that depends on coastal fishing and tourism, having both extreme air heat and extreme ocean heat happening at the same time creates practical challenges for planning and response.

Why This Pattern Matters

The June record was remarkable: 37.7°C shattered the previous highest June temperature of 35.6°C from 1976. During that June event, the Met Office issued its most severe red heat warnings three days in a row — a first since that alert category was created in 2021.

This July heatwave won't reach June's peak. But that doesn't mean it's less serious for public health. Here's the distinction: a single extreme day — like the 37.7°C in June — is a sharp spike. A full week at 30–34°C with warm nights is a different kind of stress. The body doesn't cool down at night the way it normally does, and this constant pressure builds up especially in older people and those with heart or breathing problems. A week of moderate-to-high heat with little nighttime relief can cause more deaths overall than a single scorching day.

The real shift in how we should think about UK heat is this: events that used to be rare are now coming more often. Back-to-back heatwaves in the same month — one in June, another in July — would have been extraordinary years ago. Now they fit patterns the Met Office predicted for Britain's climate as it warms. The fact that the health alert system is staying yellow for seven straight days, rather than covering just a short spike, is itself a signal that sustained heat, not just peak temperatures, is the new normal in planning terms.

For hospitals, water companies, and farms, what matters most isn't any single number on a thermometer. It's the combination: a week of sustained atmospheric heat layered on top of ocean waters reaching extreme warmth in the same week. That's the reality planners have to account for.
