You Can Now Join a WhatsApp Call Without an Account

WhatsApp has announced guest calling. It lets a person without a WhatsApp account join a 1:1 or group call from a browser. Engadget
You join through a secure web link. No app install is needed. No account is needed. That method was described in testing reported on September 9, and it is kept in the announced version. Ghacks
A guest cannot start a call. A guest can only receive and accept an invitation. The host must approve the guest before entry. Think of it as a waiting room, not an open door.
Guests get only narrow abilities. They cannot see other people's phone numbers. They cannot send messages in the call. They cannot add more people.
Once approved, a guest can stay with no time limit. They can use voice and video, share their screen, raise a hand, and send thumbs-up and heart reactions. There is no membership control or in-call messaging.
Scheduling is the related change. WhatsApp plans to launch a calendar add-on later this year. It will allow WhatsApp calls to be made from Google or Outlook calendars. Help pages note that call links cannot be added to events more than 12 months ahead, and describe an Allow guests option for group events that lets a guest bring one more guest. WhatsApp FAQ
The broader context here is phone numbers. WhatsApp has long used your phone number as your account, your address-book entry, and your proof of identity. Guest calling keeps that system for hosts and members while making a short-term, link-based exception for outsiders. Numbers stay hidden, starting calls stays closed, and host approval stays required.
In my view, the trade is deliberate and sensible. Permission is given for one call, not for a full account. The main risk moves from stolen accounts to shared links and careful host checks. That puts the work on the host to check guests and guard the link. Blocking messages and adds cuts spam, while keeping screen sharing keeps guests useful for help, interviews, and reviews. Worth flagging, the plus-one option is handy, but it passes admission one step outward.
Looking at what this enables, the gain is simpler planning. Calls can include people who do not use WhatsApp, without forcing them to install or sign up. Calendar creation shortens the path from plan to call. If the add-on arrives as described, calling becomes easier to start from tools people already use.
