Apple has shared estimated repair prices for the iPhone Duo, its new folding phone that goes on sale October 23 starting at $1,999.

Without AppleCare Plus, which is Apple's paid protection plan, the largest repairs cost $999 for damage to the inner folding screen and $1,499 for other damage The Verge. That is half the price of a new base phone for the inner screen alone, and almost three-quarters of that price for other damage.

Other repairs without coverage cost less. The cover layer, the thin protective skin over the folding screen, is $49. Back glass is $199. Rear camera damage is $229, and battery service is $229. Damage to the outer screen is $379. Damage to the outer screen and back glass together is $509.

With AppleCare Plus, the prices are lower. Battery service is $0, inner screen repair is $99, and other accidental damage is $99 The Verge. AppleCare Plus with Theft and Loss for the Duo costs $19.99 per month, $199.99 per year, or $399 flat.

Apple lists more prices with coverage. Cover layer repair is $19, front screen damage is $29, and back glass damage is $29 with AppleCare Plus Apple Support. Apple says the prices without coverage are estimates for repairs done by Apple and tax may be added. You may pay shipping if the phone must be mailed in, and Apple Authorized Service Providers, which are independent repair shops approved by Apple, can set their own prices.

The phone's design helps explain the prices. The Duo uses two batteries working together, a first for iPhone, and a built-in digital SIM card, called an eSIM, that saves space inside to leave more room for battery power Apple. Like a bedside clock, it switches to StandBy, a simple display mode, when placed down on either screen Apple Newsroom. Apple says the cover layer can be replaced MacRumors.

Normal Apple repair rules still apply. You can get help in person at any Genius Bar, which is Apple's in-store help desk, or at an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The Apple Limited Warranty covers the phone and Apple accessories in the box if there is a factory fault, for one year from purchase. It does not cover accidents or batteries that wear out with normal use. If a problem cannot be serviced, you may have to pay the full replacement cost. Apple covers its repair work and parts for 90 days or the rest of your warranty, whichever is longer. Parts used may be new or used Apple parts that have been tested and passed.

The broader picture for buyers is easy to see. One broken inner screen without coverage costs almost as much as paying for AppleCare Plus with Theft and Loss for a year. The low prices with coverage for the cover layer, front screen and back glass show where Apple expects small, common damage. For managers who buy phones for staff, that split matters. Outer fixes are small running costs. Inner screen and other damage are large costs.

In my view, the replaceable cover layer is the part to watch. At $49 without coverage and $19 with coverage, Apple seems to treat it like a wear item you swap out, not a major repair. If that proves true in daily use, owning a folding phone may feel less risky than the $999 and $1,499 prices suggest, and give Duo owners an easier fix than early folding phones offered.
