Anthropic Wants to Give Part of Its Company to Do Good

Anthropic said on Oct. 18 it will start a fund to help society and fill it with 5% of its company shares. TechCrunch Think of shares as slices of a company pie. Five out of every 100 slices would go to this fund.

The promise needs approval from stockholders. Anthropic Until owners vote yes, it is a plan, not a done deal.

The fund would live inside Anthropic and be owned by it. Anthropic said it will explain the rules in the coming months. It named no leaders and gave no dates for payments.

It also set a growth rule. For every 50% rise in company value, it can add 2% more shares, if the board agrees. The fund would then grow two ways, from more slices and from each slice being worth more.

The uses are still wide open. The fund might give large gifts to charities or send money straight to certain groups of people. One way works through existing groups. The other needs a way to choose who gets help and send payments.

Separately, Anthropic pledged $200 million to study jobs and AI. That cash is separate from the shares. The study will look at which roles and tasks change, what happens to pay, and how fast hiring shifts in affected jobs.

Earlier filings explain who is in charge. The updated company charter is dated May 7, 2026. Reuters The founders keep control through a group called Founder LLC. Reuters Four or more of the seven co-founders can direct one special control share, called Class F stock.

The broader picture here is about control. A fund inside the company is simpler to pay for and run under one roof. It is less separate than an outside charity with its own board.

For staff and investors, one point needs a close look. Setting aside shares leaves a little less for others by design. It is not yet public how the new shares vote or when they turn into cash for gifts.

In my view, the growth link is the part to watch. I have seen many one-time gifts that stay small while the company keeps growing. A rule tied to value keeps giving in step, if the company keeps it. People can track the share records over time.

Looking at the jobs study, sharing data will decide its help. Researchers already track openings and pay. They lack inside detail from AI labs. If Anthropic publishes its data and methods, work planners and policymakers can better help people adjust.
