Patreon Is Now Blocking AI Bots From Taking Creators' Content

Patreon announced on July 16, 2026 that it is working with Cloudflare to actively block AI bots from copying creator content for training purposes. The platform had previously used a passive method — a file called robots.txt — that simply asked bots to stay away. That approach had been in place since 2023 TechCrunch. The new system uses Cloudflare's AI Crawl Control technology to stop known AI training bots at the network level, while still allowing legitimate search bots that help people find Patreon pages MediaPost.
The difference between the two approaches is important. Think of robots.txt as a "no trespassing" sign on a door. It asks visitors not to enter, but it does not lock the door. Bots that chose to ignore the sign faced no consequence. The new Cloudflare-based approach is more like a locked door — it stops AI training bots before they can reach the content.
In testing, weekly attempts by AI training bots to access Patreon content dropped from thousands to zero after the blocking was turned on, according to both Patreon and TechCrunch reporting.
The change was partly driven by Patreon's own new features. The platform recently added discovery tools, including a redesigned Home Feed and short posts called Quips that resemble tweets. These features made more creator content visible on pages that bots could reach, which made the old "no trespassing sign" approach insufficient.
Patreon's product chief Drew Rowny framed the decision in terms of creator control: "creators deserve a meaningful say in how their work is used by AI companies."
Patreon will still allow bots that help organize information and direct users back to the platform. The blocking targets specifically those crawlers identified as collecting data for AI training, not all automated traffic.
The broader context here is relevant. Cloudflare launched a service called Pay Per Crawl in July 2025, which lets websites charge AI bots for accessing their content. That gives publishers a way to make money from AI crawler access instead of just choosing between allowing or blocking. Patreon has not said whether it will use Pay Per Crawl; the current setup is strictly blocking.
Cloudflare also changed its own policies in early July 2026. Mixed-use crawlers — bots that both help with search results and train AI on website content — are now blocked by default on pages that show ads. That change tightens the rules for crawlers that blur the line between searching and training, and it provides the enforcement mechanism Patreon is now using.
A pattern is emerging across the industry. Publishers and platforms that once relied on courtesy-based methods like robots.txt are shifting to enforcement at the network level, where access can be controlled technically. The robots.txt system was designed when only a few search engines were sending out bots, and those search engines generally respected the rules. It was not built for today's landscape, where dozens of AI companies have financial incentive to gather as much text, images, and data as they can.
Patreon's situation is different from many publishers because its content is paid for by fans and locked behind membership levels. Creators on Patreon have already decided who gets to see their work. The new discovery features like Quips push more content into semi-public view, which created a tension between helping people discover content and protecting it from bots. The network-level blocking addresses that tension, at least for bots Cloudflare can identify.
The open question is whether Cloudflare can keep identifying the right bots. Its AI Crawl Control depends on knowing which crawlers are collecting data for AI training. Bots that switch their IP addresses, disguise what they are, or route their traffic through everyday home internet connections can be harder to detect. Patreon's test results are encouraging — a drop from thousands of attempts to zero suggests the current set of known training bots is being caught. Whether that lasts as bot operators get smarter is a question the current facts cannot answer.
For creators on Patreon, the practical effect is simple: content they publish now sits behind a system that actively turns away known AI training bots instead of just asking them to stop. Whether that holds up over time depends on the ongoing contest between detection and evasion — a back-and-forth that anyone familiar with cybersecurity will recognize.
