Bethesda Says Fallout 5 Is Coming, Plus New Versions of Older Fallout Games

Bethesda Game Studios confirmed Fallout 5 is in preproduction, the early planning stage before full development begins. The studio also announced updated versions of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. The news came in a blog post titled "A Note from Bethesda Game Studios" published July 17, 2026 Engadget.
Studio director Todd Howard discussed the plans in a Bloomberg interview published the same day. The announcements arrive as Xbox cuts a total of 3,200 jobs, with 1,600 eliminated in early July 2026 and another 1,600 planned over the following year. Bethesda laid off dozens of workers as part of that reorganization Engadget.
The Fallout plans cover several projects. Beyond the main sequel, Bethesda confirmed that Obsidian Entertainment, a separate game studio, is developing its own Fallout game. A major expansion for Fallout 76, an online multiplayer game, is planned for 2027 and will serve as a prequel to Fallout 3. Fallout Shelter, a mobile game, is getting new seasons, and an unscripted television show based on it is also in the works Engadget.
For Bethesda's other franchises, The Elder Scrolls VI is now the primary development focus, with the majority of the studio's team working on it. Starfield, Bethesda's space exploration game, is slated to receive new stories, gameplay improvements, and Starborn content in 2027 Engadget.
The job cuts hit different parts of the company unevenly. ZeniMax Online Studios, which makes The Elder Scrolls Online, lost 213 employees at its Maryland location. A PC Gamer report indicated Microsoft filings show total ZeniMax layoffs at 379, with over half coming from the ESO studio, which lost at least 60 percent of its staff over the past year PC Gamer.
Releasing a roadmap of future projects while cutting thousands of jobs is a notable signal. The plans communicate what Bethesda is prioritizing and where its developers are being assigned, even as the workforce is shrinking.
The range of Fallout projects suggests Microsoft is treating the franchise as a long-term anchor for its gaming business. Rather than releasing a game every few years and then moving on, the company is building a continuous stream of Fallout content: a new sequel, updated versions of older games, a separate game from another studio, ongoing updates to the online game, and a TV show. Obsidian's involvement matters to fans who remember the studio's work on New Vegas, and it lets Bethesda expand the Fallout pipeline without stretching its own teams too thin.
The Elder Scrolls VI having the majority of the team, while Fallout 5 is still in preproduction, gives a rough sense of development order. It is consistent with Howard's prior public comments about which game comes first, though no release dates were given for either title.
Starfield's 2027 content plan, including Starborn-related additions, shows continued investment in that game despite a mixed response from critics when it launched. Whether that investment keeps a meaningful number of players engaged over several years is an open question, but the commitment of resources is clear.
The Fallout 76 expansion serving as a prequel to Fallout 3 is an interesting creative choice, potentially drawing players from the online game toward the updated single-player titles. That kind of cross-promotion is common in franchise management, but doing it at this scale requires coordination across multiple teams and outside partners.
For ZeniMax Online Studios, the staffing cuts raise real concerns about ongoing support for The Elder Scrolls Online and the studio's ability to take on future projects. Losing over half your staff in a year affects more than just numbers; it means losing experienced people, disrupting how teams work together, and slowing down development. The roadmap does not address ESO's future directly, leaving questions about that game's long-term outlook unanswered.
What the roadmap does establish is a clear, if distant, schedule. Bethesda's franchises have content plans extending through at least 2027, and the studio is publicly committing to that timeline even as its parent company restructures around it.
