Samsung shared more details about its upcoming smart glasses at its Unpacked event, and the key takeaway is surprising: the glasses have no screen at all. Instead of showing images on a lens, the glasses use a built-in AI chip to do things like identify objects you look at and translate languages in real time (Engadget).

Think of it like having a voice assistant built into a pair of eyeglasses. You talk to it, and it talks back. The glasses connect to your phone over Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.3 and work as a companion device rather than a standalone computer (Samsung Newsroom). A 12MP camera on the glasses feeds information to the AI chip so it can answer questions about what you are looking at, but it does not display anything on the lenses (PhoneArena).

Battery life is rated at nine hours per charge (Engadget; Android Police). The glasses come with a charging case that holds enough power for seven more charges, so you could go well over a full day without plugging into a wall. The battery is small, but because the glasses do not have a screen to power, the AI chip can run efficiently for those nine hours.

Because the glasses have a camera that is always with you, Samsung built in two privacy safeguards. A small LED light turns on whenever the camera is recording. If someone covers or blocks that light, the glasses automatically shut off the camera entirely (Engadget). This is Samsung's answer to the discomfort people have felt about wearable cameras since the original Google Glass a decade ago.

Samsung partnered with eyewear brands Warby Parker and Gentle Monster to design the frames, a sign that the company wants these to look like normal glasses people would actually wear (Engadget). Pricing and availability will be announced in the fall.

The decision to leave out a screen is the most important detail here. Screens for smart glasses are expensive and drain battery fast. By skipping the screen entirely, Samsung keeps the cost and power use down while still offering AI features like translation and visual search. The tradeoff is that you can only interact with the glasses by talking and using your phone — there is nothing to look at on the lens itself. Whether that works for people depends on how well the voice assistant understands you and how quickly it responds.

The privacy setup is worth a closer look. The LED light and automatic shutoff are a good starting point, but they assume that people around you will notice the light and know what it means. A covered-LED shutdown stops someone from secretly recording by blocking the light, but it does not solve the situation where the glasses are recording openly and bystanders simply do not realize it.

The partnerships with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster suggest Samsung knows that how the glasses look matters as much as what they do. Warby Parker gives Samsung a way to sell through mainstream eyewear stores and offer prescription lenses in North America, while Gentle Monster adds fashion appeal in Asian markets. Whether that is enough to make people wear these daily is still an open question.

For app developers, the main detail to watch is the chip inside — Qualcomm's Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1. It handles AI tasks on the glasses themselves, but apps will be limited to voice-only interaction and whatever the phone can stream. Samsung has not yet shared details about a developer program, and that information may come alongside the fall pricing announcement.
