What Happened at West Mersea Beach — and Why It Matters

A 45-year-old woman and her 15-year-old daughter died after being swept into the water at West Mersea beach in Essex on the evening of 22 July 2026. Sarah Keeling and her daughter Grace Keeling were reportedly caught when waves higher than 12 feet hit the steps leading down to the water, according to a report carried by The Times and Sunday Times on its Facebook page.
Essex Police were called by the ambulance service at 5:35pm on Wednesday to the area near Seaview Avenue, West Mersea. Officers said they believed those involved knew each other, which fits with the victims being from the same family. The police have asked anyone with information or footage to contact them on 101, quoting incident reference 1090. The beach was partly closed on Wednesday night but reopened by Thursday morning, 23 July.
The emergency response was large. The East of England Ambulance Service sent a hazardous area response team, critical care paramedics, and two air ambulances. One patient was flown to hospital and three more were taken by road. Despite their efforts, two patients could not be saved. A third person remains in hospital in a serious condition, and two others are being treated for injuries that are not life-threatening. Harwich and North Essex MP Bernard Jenkin told the BBC that "we don't think of West Mersea Beach as a dangerous beach." West Mersea sits on the southern side of Mersea Island, where the North Sea and the waters of the Blackwater estuary meet. This mix of sea and river water creates tidal conditions that can change quickly even when the beach looks calm.
The broader context here is worrying. According to the National Water Safety Forum, at least 29 people have died accidentally in open water across the UK since mid-May 2026. The coastline around Essex and the wider East Anglian shore has long seen such incidents, but the total number this season stands out to experts in coastal safety.

West Mersea, by Jenkin's own assessment, does not have the danger profile of beaches where lifeguards and hazard signs are standard. The large emergency response suggests the scene was treated as a major incident, which raises the question of whether earlier warnings to the public might have kept fewer people in the water when the large waves hit.
