AMD's New Helios System Takes On Nvidia in the AI Chip Race

AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su took the stage at a sold-out conference in San Francisco on July 23, 2026 to launch Helios, a new AMD system designed to power the world's biggest artificial intelligence. The event landed AMD its most impressive customer list ever for a data-center product: OpenAI, Meta, Oracle, Anthropic, and Microsoft all plan to use Helios. Shipments are expected to start at the end of the third quarter of 2026 (Reuters).
Su called Helios the tech industry's "highest performance AI rack" (TechCrunch). An AI rack is essentially a tall cabinet packed with specialized computer chips, all wired together and ready to plug into a massive data center. Instead of buying individual chips and assembling them yourself, a company gets the whole cabinet delivered as one unit.
A single Helios rack contains 72 AMD Instinct MI450 Series GPUs and delivers enormous computing power (AMD). Helios combines three types of AMD technology inside one rack: Instinct GPUs (the chips that do the heavy AI math), EPYC Server CPUs (the general-purpose processors that manage the work), and Pensando networking components (which move data between racks at high speed). The design is built on an open standard created by Meta and shared publicly through the Open Compute Project, meaning other companies can build compatible parts rather than being locked into one vendor (AMD, AMD). The system handles both AI training (teaching a model from scratch) and inference (running a trained model to answer questions or generate text) (AMD).
The customer commitments came together quickly in the days before the conference. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said on July 20, 2026 that Microsoft would expand its Azure cloud infrastructure with AMD Helios. On July 22, Anthropic and AMD announced a partnership to deploy up to two gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 series GPUs via the Helios rack system. Oracle, which announced in October 2025 that it will offer cloud services using AMD's upcoming AI chips, will power its AI superclusters with the Helios rack design (TechCrunch, Reuters). Helios was first revealed by AMD in 2025 and shown onstage at CES 2026 in January, making this event the formal launch with real shipment dates and named customers (TechCrunch).
Nvidia has historically dominated the market for these full-rack AI systems with its Vera Rubin and Grace Blackwell products. AMD's Helios performance numbers beat Nvidia's Vera Rubin on several measures, according to The Register (TechCrunch).
Su predicted the AI accelerator market will reach about $1.4 trillion by 2030 and said that by the end of the decade, the market for AI chips alone will approach the size of the entire semiconductor industry today (TechCrunch).
The broader context here is that AMD is not simply shipping a faster chip. Helios is a complete system delivered in one cabinet, and it is built on an open standard that anyone can use, rather than on a proprietary design controlled by a single company. Nvidia's advantage has come not just from the speed of its chips but from its widely used software platform, CUDA, and from selling complete, ready-to-go rack systems. AMD is betting that large tech companies will prefer an open standard they can customize over being locked into one supplier.
The customer list is the strongest signal here. Five of the largest buyers of AI computing power in the world have committed to Helios. Nadella publicly tying Microsoft's Azure expansion to Helios three days before AMD's event suggests this was coordinated at the executive level, not a routine purchasing decision. The Anthropic deal is particularly concrete: it specifies the chip series, the system, and a capacity of up to two gigawatts, which is roughly the power output of a large power plant.
There are real unknowns. AMD did not announce full general availability at the conference; shipments start at the end of Q3 2026, and the Venice-X CPU, which is part of the complete system, is not expected until 2027. The performance numbers beating Nvidia's Vera Rubin come from AMD's own benchmarks as reported by The Register, and comparisons between rival AI chipmakers have a long history of dispute. The $1.4 trillion market figure Su cited for 2030 is AMD's own forecast, not an independent estimate.
What is clear is that the AI chip market is no longer a one-company game. The biggest tech companies are spreading their orders across multiple suppliers, and AMD has moved from the sidelines to the short list for large-scale AI deployments. Whether AMD can actually ship enough units and mature its software fast enough to keep its customers happy is the question the next two quarters will answer.
