On July 29, 2026, the Environment Agency announced that half of England is officially in drought. Seven areas across the south, Midlands, and East Anglia are now formally designated as drought zones. July is set to be the driest month of July ever recorded in England (The Guardian).

The seven areas placed in official drought status are: East Anglia; Hertfordshire and the whole of London; Thames Valley; Hampshire and the Isle of Wight; Devon and Cornwall; the West Midlands; and Wessex, covering Dorset, Somerset, Wiltshire, and south Gloucestershire. Together, these regions are home to a large share of England's population and produce a significant amount of the country's food.

Helen Wakeham, the Environment Agency's director of water and chair of the National Drought Group, said that hot and dry weather means "water is being used faster than nature can replenish it." She called it "an exceptionally serious situation with long-lasting impacts on the environment, wildlife, and the economy" and noted that this is the second summer in a row with drought conditions. She urged people to conserve water, saying that "every drop of water saved is a drop more for nature and agriculture" (The Guardian).

What makes this drought unusual is how fast it happened. The Agency called it a "flash drought" — meaning it developed quickly because there was very little rain at the same time as unusually high temperatures. Think of it like a sponge left in the sun: if it stops getting wet and the heat keeps beating down, it dries out far faster than you would expect. The situation was already building before summer. Spring 2026 was the warmest on record for England and Wales and the third warmest for the UK overall, according to the Met Office. That wetter period followed winter flooding, making 2026 a year of weather extremes. Because this is the second dry summer in a row, reservoirs and underground water reserves that did not fully refill over the winter are being drained again. That narrows the gap before stricter measures — like hosepipe bans and drought permits — become necessary.

A Met Office forecast issued on July 14, 2026, indicated that significant rainfall was not expected soon for many areas, with dry weather forecast to continue for most of the country (Met Office). That forecast held through the second half of the month, pushing England toward what is now projected to be its driest July on record.

The effects are already visible. Lock restrictions have been in effect on the River Thames between July 7 and July 31, 2026, due to drought conditions, with boaters warned of navigation delays of up to two hours on weekdays (Environment Agency). These restrictions reflect lower river flows, which make the water too shallow in places for boats and put further pressure on the environment.

The drought is concentrated in southern England, which matches the rainfall pattern from spring. The south received the least rain and is now bearing the brunt of the drying. East Anglia, a major farming region, faces particular strain on water supplies for irrigation at a critical point in the growing season. The inclusion of Devon and Cornwall, Wessex, and the West Midlands shows that the weather pattern driving this drought is broad, not limited to one corner of the country.

Wakeham's mention of "long-lasting impacts on the environment, wildlife, and the economy" points to how droughts affect many different areas. Lower river flows concentrate pollutants, raise water temperatures, and harm aquatic habitats, especially for sensitive species. In farming, a drought during peak growing season adds pressure to areas already short on water. Economically, restrictions on river navigation and water use affect businesses from river-based freight and tourism to food production.

The fact that this is the second consecutive summer drought raises the stakes. Back-to-back drought years prevent water systems from recovering between episodes, increasing the likelihood that drought designations will persist or deepen into autumn.
