Tesla Has Built 10 Million Cars — So What Comes Next?

Tesla announced on July 30, 2026 that it had built its 10 millionth electric vehicle. The milestone comes six years after the company produced its one-millionth car. In that time, Tesla added roughly nine million vehicles, powered by strong sales of the Model 3 and Model Y and the launch of the Cybertruck (TechCrunch).

The number lines up with Tesla's own sales data. As of early July 2026, Tesla had sold 9,721,070 vehicles cumulatively, meaning the company needed about 278,930 more to reach 10 million (CleanTechnica). Tesla also said on July 24, 2026 that it had produced its 10 millionth drive unit, the motor assembly that powers each car (Teslarati).

But the milestone arrives during a tougher period for Tesla's business. The company's U.S. sales fell 13% in the second quarter of 2026 compared to a year earlier (TechCrunch). Tesla has never sold 2 million vehicles in a single year. In 2026, the company pushed into Japan, Australia, and Lithuania looking for new buyers, according to its Q2 2026 update (TechCrunch).

For a sense of scale: BYD, Tesla's main competitor, had built and sold over 17 million "new energy vehicles" by mid-2026. About half of those were hybrids, which use both gasoline and electricity, so the comparison is not exact. But it shows where Tesla stands in the global market for electrified vehicles (TechCrunch).

The 10-million figure also matters for Elon Musk personally. Building 20 million vehicles is one of several goals tied to Musk's $1 trillion pay package, which Tesla shareholders approved in 2025 (TechCrunch). To unlock the full amount by 2035, Musk must hit four targets: build 20 million vehicles, reach 10 million active subscribers to Tesla's Full Self-Driving software, deliver 1 million humanoid robots, and put 1 million robotaxis on the road. A fifth condition requires Tesla's adjusted EBITDA — a common way to measure a company's operating profit — to reach $400 billion by the same year (TechCrunch).

The gap between those targets and where Tesla stands today is large. As of mid-2026, Tesla had just under 1.5 million Full Self-Driving subscribers. Its adjusted EBITDA was about $3.27 billion and had been shrinking. Musk once promised Tesla would produce 20 million cars per year by 2030, but he dropped that target a few years ago as sales slowed (TechCrunch).

The robot and robotaxi goals add more uncertainty. Tesla said in its Q1 2026 update that it was designing its robot production for a long-term capacity of 10 million robots per year (Tesla IR). But whether that capacity leads to the 1 million delivered bots required by the pay package depends on whether people actually want them, whether the software works, and whether Tesla can scale up a product that, unlike cars, has no existing market.

The 10-million milestone puts Tesla halfway to the 20-million-vehicle goal with about nine years left. Tesla built nine million vehicles in the past six years. To hit 20 million by 2035, it needs to build another 10 million in roughly the same timeframe, which would require annual production well above anything it has done so far. With sales falling in its largest market and the company turning to smaller ones, building the cars is not the same as selling them at the pace the pay-package goal implies.

There is a deeper concern here. Tesla's EBITDA of $3.27 billion would need to grow more than a hundredfold in under a decade to reach the $400 billion target. The vehicle milestone, while real, is probably the easiest of the five conditions to meet. The EBITDA figure, the self-driving subscription count, the robot deliveries, and the robotaxi rollout each face their own obstacles, and none of them is close to its 2035 target.

Tesla has reached a genuine manufacturing milestone. The harder question is whether the next 10 million vehicles will bring enough revenue and new product success to make the rest of the pay-package math work.
