The 2026 Lexus ES 500e starts at $51,895 and drives well, but its fast-charging speed peaks at 150 kW, a rate Engadget describes as slow and less than half the charging speed of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Electric. That one number captures the core trade-off of Lexus's redesigned ES: a luxury sedan that feels thoroughly well-built, but uses electric-car hardware that falls behind what competitors offer.

The redesigned ES lineup, now on sale, comes in three versions. The ES 350h is a hybrid (a car that combines a gas engine with an electric motor) producing 243 horsepower, starting at $51,095, with front- or all-wheel drive. The ES 350e is a fully electric model with one motor, 221 horsepower, starting at $48,895, offering up to 307 miles of range on a full charge. The ES 500e adds a second motor for all-wheel drive, producing 338 horsepower total, with range up to 276 miles. Both electric versions share a 74.7-kWh battery pack, which is the size of the battery that stores the energy powering the car (Engadget).

The ES 500e uses the same 221-hp front motor as the ES 350e and adds a 118-horsepower motor on the rear axle (Lexus Pressroom). Higher-trim ES 500e models are priced at $55,895 and $57,295, all figures including a $1,395 delivery and handling fee. Car and Driver places the EV range's ceiling at $60,295 depending on options (Car and Driver).

This is the first generation of the ES to offer fully electric powertrains. Lexus unveiled the all-new model at the Shanghai Motor Show in April 2025 as the second of three new electric models scheduled to debut by March 2026 (Toyota Global Newsroom; Lexus Pressroom). The hybrid version joined the lineup later, with Lexus confirming the full three-version structure in May 2026 (Lexus Pressroom).

The 2026 ES grew roughly 6.5 inches in length over the previous model, with the added space going to rear-seat legroom and trunk space. The main screen is a 14-inch touchscreen paired with a 12.3-inch digital display behind the steering wheel. In Luxury trim, the ES 500e weighs nearly 5,000 pounds, roughly 1,000 pounds more than the base hybrid.

That weight gap matters. A 74.7-kWh battery in a near-5,000-pound sedan puts the ES 500e at the heavier end of the luxury electric-car category. The relatively small battery for a car this heavy helps explain why the range tops out at 276 miles. Competitors with larger batteries and more advanced electrical systems routinely exceed 300 miles with two motors while charging at 250 kW or more.

The 150 kW charging cap is the bigger limitation. Think of it like filling a glass at a water fountain versus under a faucet — the ES fills more slowly. On a road trip, charging from 10 to 80 percent on a 150 kW charger will take meaningfully longer than on a competitor charging at 250 kW or more, assuming the charging station can deliver the higher speed. For buyers who mainly charge at home and rarely drive beyond the daily range, this may not matter. For those who expect their electric car to behave like a gas sedan on long trips, it is a constraint that no amount of cabin comfort offsets.

Engadget's first-drive review concludes that the ES 500e is priced right and drives great but feels built around outdated electric-car tech (Engadget). That framing is precise. The sedan's handling, interior space, and pricing reflect the kind of careful engineering Lexus has built its reputation on. The charging system and battery size, by contrast, read as a generation behind.

The broader context here is that the ES is arriving in a market where fast-charging capability is no longer rare. Hyundai's electric vehicles, the Porsche Taycan, and newer entries from Mercedes and BMW have made fast charging a standard expectation that the ES cannot match. A buyer comparing the ES 500e to a Mercedes-Benz C-Class Electric will find similar luxury appeal but noticeably different road-trip charging experiences.

The broader question for Lexus is whether the ES's electric versions are meant to compete head-to-head with purpose-built electric cars or to serve as a transitional option for loyal buyers who want electric power without leaving the brand. The pricing suggests the latter. The $48,895 starting price for the ES 350e undercuts most purpose-built electric luxury cars, and sharing the platform with the hybrid spreads development costs across more models.

That is a defensible strategy. It also means the ES 500e is, by design, not pushing the limits on charging speed. Buyers who prioritize cabin comfort, ride quality, and brand familiarity over fast-charge times will find a well-executed package. Buyers who want the fastest charging available will look elsewhere.

In my view, what Lexus has done here is the kind of practical bet we have seen from established automakers before — building a solid product on familiar underpinnings rather than chasing the leading edge on every specification. It worked for Toyota's hybrid strategy two decades ago. Whether it works in an electric-car market where charging speed is increasingly a headline concern is a separate question, and one the ES 500e does not fully answer.
